That on-screen clock has returned to C4 in the pre-9am slot and it's more hideous than ever. I thought we'd seen the last of that when the idents changed.

I'll probably get a slamming for posting this, but what's wrong with an on -screen clock in Breakfast time? Most other channels have one in this timeslot: Breakfast on BBC ONE & News 24, CBBC on BBC TWO and The CBBC Channel, GMTV on ITV1 etc. It's considered to be genuinely useful to the audience... I tend to agree that a Clock at Breakfast time is useful - certainly far more than those that say a Channel identifier ( DOG or BUG) is genuinely useful.

Computer Actuated Time.

Presumably DOG was formed by analogy.

Depends who you believe, but DOG stands for Digitally Orientated Graphic or Digital Onscreen Graphic.

I've no idea what BUG stands for though...

I think the DOG came before the CAT - the CAT came along to give the DOG a friend. BUG, meanwhile, stands for absolutely nothing at all. As such, it is written in capital letters for absolutely no reason!

I always thought a 'bug' (lower case IMO) was named because it is a smallish graphic a bit like a small insect, or bug, on the screen.

Possibly related to a crawler?

lol! Great analagy! I think crawler is so-called because when captions were created using rolls of paper and mechanical devices in front of a camera, the words crawl and scroll were used to differentiate between horizontally and vertically moving text.
