Does seem like costs are really beginning to bite at both BT and Sky. Obviously in BT's case having Champions League right will drive subscriptions more than a European Football Show but I think when you're paying for sport you expect a little bit more than just a live feed of the match and fairly generic filler programming.
As for the Champions League Goal Show - wouldn't be surprised if they just role that into Score.
Remember too that in this financial year the PL 2019-22 rights come to market, as have the England Cricket ones. Enormously expensive one for both.
BT have a new box in the pipeline too.
Feels like the PL rights are always on the market considering we're talking about the next rights during the first season of the current rights. Now everytime we expect the bubble to burst and of course it never does but this time it feels different. It is generally agreed too much was paid (by Sky at least) and there has been obvious consequences of that over payment. Add the uncertainty caused by Brexit and very real squeezing of living standards and surely if ever there was a time for the value to dip it has to be this time.
Be interesting to see what the PL do, if say Discovery Eurosport, BeIn Sport, Amazon Prime ect publically say before the deadline to submit bids, that they are not interested - leaving only Sky and BT as the only players with cards at the UK/Ireland pay tv rights table.
The PL's tactic to drive up the price last time around was to play each other off by letting them think there were other interested parties. If the fact that if they knew there are no others coming out to play, that would in effect let Sky and BT decide their own prices and the Prem League would have no other option but to sell the rights at that price.
BT Sport are doing their own presentation for the America's Cup from Bermuda, and have just gone on air for a 2 hour programme... to announce that it's too windy for racing today.
