So what next in 2014 ...
The Rights available in 2014 seem limited ...
only five deals seem to be on offer.
Tennis ... Davis Cup (rights currently with Eurosport expiry 2013)
French Open (ITV exp 2014)
Golf ... Masters and US Open (BSB exp 2014)
Football ... Scottish Championship (New Rights - proposed with restructuring announced Summer 2013 - Rangers should be competing in 2014-2015)
The one rights package that now stands out as rather lonely in Sky's portfolio is La Liga, It was fine when the teams were shown as Champions League participants. Those rights expire in 2015. They'd fit well into an expanded domestic European Portfolio on BT Sport to rest alongside the newly acquired CL package.

I don't think Sky would give up La Liga because they've lost the Champions League - there is a reason La Liga is the only foreign football really on Sky.
Davis Cup could be interesting - with Britain back in the top tier the BBC should be interested again. ITV4 might be, but not likely I think (I'd be surprised if they kept the French Open too). I do think giving Eurosport exclusive rights was a mistake - it meant less coverage overall and the tournament was served better when the British rights were separate to the rest of the world. BT will almost certainly be interested I'd have thought - they need some quality mens tennis to support their WTA coverage.

.... and despite the protestations that BSB thought the price was too high, the FT tonight is reporting that they attempted to break back into the negotiation process late on Friday evening on hearing that BT were in exclusive talks. They report that Sky made several calls which failed to UEFA to attempt to derail the BT deal.
The FT fails to disclose whether UEFA declined these attempts directly or that BSB were allowed back in but still failed to reach the BT bid and were then turned away.

Well know SKY knows how ITV felt back in 1992 with the premier league.

LOL. At least Sky can console themselves their £20m Sunday afternoon line up of 3 Premier League matches just about scrapped past 2m for the last match. We know subscriptions more than advertising pays for the rights but surely that sort of figure can't be sustainable.
One positive in all this is at least BT will have some football coverage where they don't use that damn "Come Together" theme! It's getting majorly annoying.

Also tonight suggestion that the Highlights package could be sorted quickly, with ITV in pole position for these, at least ITV should get FULL highlights rather than half that they get at the moment. BBC are standing by though.
Interestingly Sky are apparently eligible to apply for highlights although the sponsors might object to all rights being behind paywalls.

More backstory on the events of last week, apparently BT's 'Silly Money' wasn't that much in excess of Sky/ITV after all, sources reported today indicate the existing holders bid £800m only £99m less than BT's successful offer.
What's even more revealing is another story which infers that BT almost got 5 packages instead of 2 in the Premier League auction only losing out marginally in the contest for the three other packs. I'd speculate that Sky's rapid sign up to extend it's FL coverage is connected with this PL fright.
Another article advises Dannoch at BSB to call off the war with BT and enter into full WMO offers for all it's services with other carriers in all formats. BSB's stance post UEFA seen no longer as positive for the company in negotiations with rights holders.
We'll see, resolution of European RU should come soon which will be enormous in it's consequences for both BT and BSB.,

I think your use of the word "only" in relation to £99,000,000 shows just how ridiculous the money involved really is.

Not quite the case - ITV bid £220m while Sky bid £500m - but for exclusive rights, not in conjunction with ITV, according to reports yesterday.
That's interesting. I doubt they'd have gone down the "free" route if they had all that.
