Yep, looks like that was a blunder in hindsight.
Not really, it allowed then to secure their football rights in the previous round.
What does seem a mistake is letting FA Cup go, to focus on this Champions League round.
BT is the big game changer, ITV can't compete with them & Sky so they'll have to settle for picking up rights to the events with protected status.
Well according to the ITV sport insider on DS they didn't have a choice as BT refused to bid with them and made it clear to the FA that they would only deal with the BBC. Gary Lineker and Jake Humphreys even gave the final BBC/BT presentation together.
What do ITV have left? Didn't they ditch the F1 in order to concentrate on all the football they have just lost?

So the BBC going to get a few of the Live matches?

Doubt it. One of the reports today suggests BT Sport will remain free with BT Broadband but there will be charges in place for some Champions League games - can't see how that would work at all. I just think by the time this deal kicks in the season after next BT will begin charging for BT Sport, although at a more attractive fee than Sky Sports.
Of course by the time these matches go to air the rights for the next three years of Premier League games will have already been awarded (to kick in the following season). How that will unfold nobody knows - still would expect Sky to keep the lions share of the rights.

Nah BT will show them all but the final and one game for each English team will be aired free. The BBC and ITV are both in talks for highlights according to Dan Roan. According to the Telegraph Sky's bid was for all the coverage with the promise of subletting some games to ITV.

Well I think Jake said at least one game featuring of each of the British sides, so it could be more. Can't see any more than about 7 games being free in the Champions League though.

If they offered any of the knock-out games free I suspect it would only be the first leg of the ties, and probably the least attractive of any games featuring home nations.
Similarly with the group games it's bound to be the ties featuring little known Eastern European opposition rather than any of the big clashes.

The next obvious question is who, if anyone, will get free to air terrestrial highlights? ITV will be eager to have them, but I'd imagine Channel 5, having lost Europa league before, will also be keen to get them. If ITV were to fail to land even the highlights, then it does make you wonder if, when the next English Club Rugby deal comes up, I believe that's 2017, if ITV may try to get some live matches.
On the topic of football coverage, if ITV fail to retain even the highlights, then that means they're left with just international games, and the Bundesliga highlights, am I right?
