BT Openworld ADSL desperate help!

Hello all once again, I have limited time before my modem shuts down, so I will make this brief.

I just ordered BT openworld, it took 2 months to get here and the technician installed it and he left. Now, there are serious problems that the modem powers down after a few mins and I lose my connection! I phoned support and they said 'do you have a VIA motherboard...' I said 'yes'. There is apparently a problem with VIA motherboards that can't handle the power that the modem needs (500 milliamps apparently). There is no external power source for the manta ray modem, so it runs off the Mobo. I have tried using all various USB ports, tried reinstalling and repairing the modem, and nothing works!

HELP...what should I do, I have ADSL, but for 5 mins at a stretch before it shuts itself down and freezes my machine!

I have a VIA chipset,
256 MB RAM
Manta Ray home 500 ADSL kit.
1Ghz CPU
32MB Nvidia Geforce 2
4 USB ports

As well as printer, speakers and the like connected. How can I combat this problem, I simply can't afford to upgrade my mobo.
