But what about border? Than covers both scotland and England. In the US, They Show a show at 8pm EST, and 7pm CT, so their showing the show at the same time, but Just an hour earlier in the Midwest. It's harder in canada, with 6 timezones.
The problem is though that Scotland would be an hour ahead.
If it was an hour behind, I think STV would probably just screen ITV's schedule an hour later (i.e. at the same time!) - but I can't see ITV allowing them to screen the schedule an hour before the rest of the UK, so the most likely outcome would be STV viewers watch things at the same time as ITV viewers, but while Emmerdale is on at 7pm here, in Scotland it 8pm.
Anyhow, back off topic and I'm sure any lives saved by the lighter nights would be risked by not just the darker mornings, but also the increased risk of frost, mist, fog etc.
The only argument IMO which has any substance is over saving energy, with an extra hour of natural daylight in the late afternoon meaning an hour less with the lights on!
The present set up of GMT and BST was created due to no street light, no cars or even car lights, no type of artificial light whatsoever. But as the world has progressed through the centuries no-one has actually thought about the why we still have the two times nowadays - farmers can work under halogen, milkmen and postmen have lights on their vehicles, children ARE supposed to wear reflective gear during winter months, open cast mines work under halogen etc...so that actually goes against the grain of the main argument for the timezones. If its due to personal preference then that defeats the objective and there would be such a plit of opinion that no-one, and it seems that way, would ever agree.
You make it sound like BST has been around for centuries! It was introduced only 90 years ago (1916). As an aside, public street lighting was introduced in 1807.
BST was permanently in force from 1940 to 1945, and again in 1968 to 1971. We had double BST in 1941 to 1947.
It's not like these ideas are new. They've been tried before, and we've always changed back again. Does that not suggest that the system we currently have was thought to be the best, all things considered?
Getting back onto the TV presentation related side of things... I didn't hear any references to the clocks going back in continuity announcements (mainly because I was asleep at the time!) but I assume some were made on the main channels...
