One thing I haven't heard this time is the argument of Scotland changing it's time zone to be one hour ahead of the rest of the UK.

That would screw the TV schedules up!

Why not just use BST all year around (so BST becomes GMT if you like). It's more beneficial to have an extra hour of daylight in the afternoon/evening than in the morning. Afterall, nobody complains about losing an hour of daylight in the morning when the clocks go foward in March!! There are more people up and about at 16:45 than at 07:45

Plus it would save us having to change the clocks every six months. Look on the bright side-- it doesn't get fully dark until ~30 mins after sunset (reverse is true at sunrise)

I wish they would do that as well. I hate the dark nights when it starts getting dark about 4pm but by December we are used to it and then its odd when the nights start getting lighter in March/April.

Indeed it would. But the reason I'm in favour of GMT+2 in the summer months is because it gets light far too early IMO. In June it's full daylight at 4:30, perhaps even earlier. I can't sleep well in the daylight. I wouldn't mind an extra hour of daylight in the evening if it meant it didn't get light so bloody early.

I dont mind the light mornings because im asleep at 4.30am anyway so dont notice. And I prefer it to be light when I get up not like at 7.30am in December when its still dark!

IMHO how about having the same time zone as Central Europe (i.e. Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France etc) would save the confusion when travelling to and from the mainland. Also at the same time, and in agreance with everyone else, stop messing around with time - one time and keep to it all year round

I agree but everyone moves back an hour to BST Laughing

If we stayed BST all year the sun wouldn't rise until 9.30am on the shortest day, which would be strange to say the least

Well, we could bu99er up our time zones. Or you could buy some decent curtains.

I'm sick to death of this argument, particularly from those in the south of the country. Annoyingly it comes round twice as frequently as the "exams are easier" news filler crap.

In the north (Manchester is not "north") of the British Isles in December it is not daylight until 0830/0900. And dark again at 1600/1630. In June it does not get properly dark at all.

Double summertime would mean that it did not get daylight until almost 10am. It would still be dark at 1700/1730 in winter.

The present system means the majority of schoolchildren get to and from school in daylight. ANY adjustment in either direction removes this advantage. That is why we have the present system.

I like the current system. In the summer I really look forward to the clocks going forward so we get that extra hour of sunlight in the evening but as winter approaches, I can't wait for the clocks to go back so that it gets dark at about 4pm. Its hard to explain why, but its just what I think Laughing

Adjusting the times to be like the rest of Europe wouldn't be a good thing because it would theoretically cause more rapes, muggings etc because people would less expect it in the morning so the people who commit these horrific crimes would wait about in the morning waiting for their victims. It would also cause more road accidents with 'black ice' being even harder to spot on the roads in the very middle of winter. And the schoolrun advantage would be taken away as said by the poster above .

The present set up of GMT and BST was created due to no street light, no cars or even car lights, no type of artificial light whatsoever. But as the world has progressed through the centuries no-one has actually thought about the why we still have the two times nowadays - farmers can work under halogen, milkmen and postmen have lights on their vehicles, children ARE supposed to wear reflective gear during winter months, open cast mines work under halogen etc...so that actually goes against the grain of the main argument for the timezones. If its due to personal preference then that defeats the objective and there would be such a plit of opinion that no-one, and it seems that way, would ever agree.

For my honest opion see my first post in this thread. There again we are not the only country to have the twice yearly debate - all countries that change times have the same debate - we are not unique!
