to answer some of the brookside questions i have borrowed the photo DJGM posted, hope he does not mind.
working anti clockwise from bottom right numbers 1 to 3 was used for editing, wardrobe, make up, etc. number 4 was the canteen, 5-10 were the character houses and 11-12 were used as offices. there is a bungalow further down the road next to the barrier which was the security office. some of the house in the street behind numbers 9 and 10 were also used as offices.
hollyoaks used numbers 8 and 7 at the bottom of the close renumbering them 19 and 20.
the street in the bottom left of the photo is rowan close and is on a separate estate
The set for the parade was built from an old science block at childwall college which was divided up into 6 units to make the shops.
the flats above were a bit of a confusion as they seemed to somehow over lap each other at first but they finally setted on three flat above the 6 units on the parade. these units have now been returned back to their original classroom status and the area of the petrol station had been turned into a playground for grange hill
to answer the question about where open all hours was filmed it was in lister avenue, the shop is on the corner of scarth avenue.
hope that answers a few questions

no you were not going mad, the reason why in brookside you never saw inside michaelsons house and the door was covered was because the house interior was being used by hollyoaks.
the reason mersey tv got rid of them was because it was difficult to disguise them externally for use in hollyoaks

What happened to the old Big Breakfast house?
AFAIK after the fire it was bought privately and turned into a home . . .
Before the arson attack Channel 4 was hoping to get around £1million for it's sale. It eventually sold for about 40% less.
Since then, the owners have completely repaired and renovated it. They've kept a ten foot barbed wire topped security
fence attached to the old white picket fence, to prevent East End chav thugs getting in and wrecking the place again.
"The Cottage" as it's now known, is a residential property. The owners even lived in part of it during the repair work.
Although going off topic again, here's the BB house from above

So can anyone just drive or walk into the close now?
And is the shopping Parade still assembled or dismantled now?

The close has been sold to an unknown developer according to GVA Grimley who were handling the sale. Access is still restricted by the barrier and a security guard but apparently talk to him nicely and he will let you on to have a quick look at the close. Its quite sad really seeing the close in such a state, imagine though living in one of those houses when they are finally put up for sale, I don't think I'd like it, you would be constantly disturbed by fans peeping through your window!!

Here a few pics that I have found of how the old Brookside Parade looks now that Hollyoaks and Grange Hill share it. The petrol Station has been replaced by a new building. Hollyoaks S U Bar is where Bev's Bar used to be and the rest of it is used for the exterior of Grange Hill.

Agreed - why not move it here:
