I agree with Asa about the starting up of such new forums, and I can't help but feel Metropol isn't the right place for a TV tech discussion forum. It might work on here, if TV Home Forum is split up into general TV discussion (programmes, channels, etc) and a technical forum.

Regardless of where it is, ideally it would be the TV equivilent of the tech forum over on Media UK, which is filled by radio techies in the industry these days, which I think would be difficult to achieve with TV without attracting many professionals in this field, which due to the somewhat more close nature of TV may be difficult.

If I'm reading the description over at Metroplop correctly, they're not just going for "TV technical" , but "broadcasting technical" in general.

They mention radio and other things as well as just TV, so it looks like it could well be pretty good.

With the radio forum already over there, it seems to fit in quite nicely.

For what it's worth, the MediaUK tech forum is nominally for TV as well, not just radio.

To be honest I'm a little bemused - surely there's been nothing ever stopping that kind of discussion from appearing in this forum?

Agreed. Absolutely no need for a separate forum. A true presentation enthusiast will have a keen interest in the technical aspect of television presentation/production. This is the perfect forum for such discussion.

Although you don't get many posts there about TV related matters, MediaUK is very radio-centric

I'm always a bit wary about launching new forums - the Newsroom and Mock Designs were both born out of a significant number of related topics appearing which could be nicely categorised.

Didn't either TV Home or The Lounge previously have something called 'Technical Forum' which was discontinued for some reason. I've tried to find a screen cap showing it on a menu though.

Obviously good luck to the new forum, despite the cheap pun of the tag line!

Metropol was split into three years ago as The Lounge, Computer Clinic and Tech Talk (about gadgets and stuff). Is this what you're thinking of?

The only other forum I can remember this place having was Site News and Discussion, which was even bitchier than The (original) Lounge.

I'll thank M24/7 for establishing the subforum there, some of the comments here about thread closure were the reason why I though separation would be better.

A thread about 256QAM for example, really isn't presentation related, neither would be the niceties of the politics of EPG generation and delivery.

I'd like as instigator of this thread to thank you all for your input.

I managed to get a activation link, had to get the forum software to resend me one.

If only the moderators of this place had always been aware of Asa's view on this, the more technical members here, rather than being totally put off and threatened with a week's ban for "going off topic", could have carried on discussing technical matters here.

As it is, we have a typical case of "what goes around, comes around" and the technical forum has gone elsewhere.
