A broadcasting technical forum?

thoughts please (November 2008)

This site closed in March 2021 and is now a read-only archive

Depending on responses I might have a go at creating one.....

In the not so dim and distant past there was a site that wasn't over bothered with the licence fee and whether a pay tv operator should have an extra football match at 2.35am on a Sunday morning after a new moon.

It had interesting discussions on how platforms could develop and the technologies behind them rather than whether or not a starlet flashed her boobs at a preview.

Does anyone here think a new site with a somewhat restricted remit would go down well in 2009?

There are numerous blogs from which discussions could follow now.

Any thoughts, please?

(If mods deem this an inappropriate thread, sorry, feel totally free as far as I'm concerned to close and or delete this)

I'd be interested... Particularly if it fostered intelligent debate about stuff rather than just ignorant rants and slaggings off of various channels and platform operators. (I'm not at all having a go at TV Forum, there are other places which are a dead loss...)

Also interested here. However, I think it may be a better idea for a new sub-forum on here, just with dedicated mods and stricter rules to the rest of the site. I don't think a stand-alone site would be able to get sufficient people interested to make it work. If it was successful (or the quality of posts was dragged down too much) it could always be spun off at a later date.

If not DVB Cornwall himself, Asa should I think have first refusal as a guest host, otherwise - would you be happy to navigate to Metropol, alongside the Birdsong radio forum?

Its a subject I'm very interested in.

Just a thought.

I'd read it and interject with noobish questions from time to time, a bit like when that sort of discussion could happen at DS (which I'm assuming DVB is referring to!). Would much rather the right sort of people from here populated it too.

I'm interested, although I wonder if there will be enough discussion to support a strictly technical forum standing alone.

I don't contribute to 'the other place', as the longer a thread goes on, the probability of the discussion turning into an anti BBC rant approaches one.

Whereas I quite like the banter on the BBC Backstage mailing list. It was never really meant as a general talking shop about all things technical at the BBC, but when you have so many technical people subscribed the discussions things just turn out that way. Although discussion is mainly internet centric (because that is what the list is about) there are often tangents into other areas of broadcast technology.

Very much interested.

It was technical matters which brought me here in the first place.

Hence a sub forum on an existing site, perhaps. Birdsong is always the busiest place, but the longer it is there the larger its visitor numbers.

That would be down to appropriate moderation for a technical forum - which I would be happy to undertake myself.

Unless Asa would like to step in, then we'll go ahead and set one up. No harm in trying!

Ok,

Let's give this thread until the end of the month and then depending on the level of interest, I'll drop ASA and Hyma a PM on their respective boards and see what they might be able to do, and more to the point whether they'd be willing to try.

I'd be interested too.

Here is a good place for technical talk already compared with the alternatives Other places either end up as anti-bbc rants (DigitalSpy) or a load of bitter ex-engineers moaning about things aren't as good as they used to be (uk.tech.broadcast)

There is the Tech ops forum of the Mausoleum Club which is good for the more historical aspects but is closed to new members

I particularly recommend the posts by 'YellowTriumph' about the old days of ITV such as....

Worth a shot. Let's get back to mature and intelligent debate. I have no technical knowledge of tv but am willing to learn.
