I read in another thread that RedBee designed the Sports Sets, and BDA did the NWT/Breakfast thread.

So this begs the question...

Who is designing the new Broadcasting House sets?

BDA.

Oh crap... Lets hope they do a better job than NWT. - Interesting that Jago haven't been brought in.

We've already seen some great looking mockups:

Didn't BDA take over/merge with Jago?

I don't think they've done a bad job with NWT. The studio itself is the real limiting factor in that space. Quite difficult to make use of, and it's actually technically a great adaptation of the box with screens design. I mean, for one thing, we don't know what the budget was, or indeed the brief.

Something like that, Simon Jago is now the set design creative director at BDA.

BDA has the temporary BBC Sport set based in the rented studio on their website, so I feared they were also behind the much poorer sets in BBC Sport Centre. It's reassuring to know that they aren't, so we can expect a higher standard from their BH sets.

Considering the going rate of 103" plasmas, I'd say it wasn't exactly a tight budget. I do agree that realities of the studio space is the cause of its problems, however.

I agree, Having a look at that 360 degree view, I was surprised how small the studio was. When you see the closer than comfortable Breakfast shots, you didn't realise the camera was against the wall! They have done brilliantly with that small space, room for sofa and not to intimidating close ups and a large space where features/performances can be held.

We haven't seen many studio shots coming from New Broadcasting House but I stumbled across this photo on Twitter of the Virtual Studio. Not much to see as such.

What's the plan for that studio? (Which programmes)

From what has been posted I don't think anything is necessarily assigned to this studio. There are five studios, IIRC, each of different sizes and each will suit particular programmes. Each studio works into it's own gallery but the galleries are designed to allow them to flex up and down depending on staffing/programme.

I imagine the virtual studio will be used for a miriade of programmes and might well be used for more complex pieces for news packages.

Looks like the section in front of the desk is some kind of screen.

It just looked like a basic uplit perspex element in the renders, but the way it seems to be illuminated on one side only suggests it's actually some kind of LED screen. Though perhaps it is the former, and it's just protective film reflecting light - You don't often see things like that added to sets which aren't present in renders, it's usually the reverse!

Yes it looks like a curved LED display. I trust it won't do anything tacky like say "BREAKING NEWS" and such - displaying programme specific colours would be nice enough.

The fact that you can't see any pixels on it (a limitation, usually, on this type of panel) might mean that its covered with a diffusion material - like an opaque acrylic - so that it probably can't be used for text at all, and will only be suitable for a colour wash.
