I can't say I remember it but the have seen a lot. It does however look stunning.

What do we think this could be used for? Elections and Dateline London are obvious candidates. With modification I could see The Andrew Marr show and Sunday Politics would work well.

Look out for a documentary coming soon on BBC Four: Tales of Television Centre. It's on at the BFI next Tuesday, introduced by its producer and Sarah Greene, but it's all sold out. (Probably because lots of ex-techies have bought tickets.)

Picture of Studio C in Broadcasting House. It looks stunning and fairly finished aswell!

Oh dear, it looks as though they've found a new home for one of those washed-out back projection screens from N8. Sad

It's Smart Glass actually.

For those not knowledgeable in broadcasting technology, could you explain the difference please?

Edit: Also, anyone know what kind of screen that is at the back? The one with the view of London on it. I'm assuming it's a screen, not a lightbox, as that surely wouldn't be practical? But looking at that photo it would be too big to be a plasma, and doesn't appear to be BARCOs?

Smart Glass can be switched from opaque to frosted to provide a surface for projection. When the screen is not required, it can be switched to clear, and therefore become see-through.

Oh of course, I've actually come into contact with the stuff. Just didn't put two and two together. Clever to use in a studio.

The BBC have used them before - in N8 in 2003.
It was fairly rare to see them in their transparent state, but it did happen occasionally:

There's now one (possibly ex-N8?) in the reception area of TVC.

Apparently they don't start broadcasting from there until September.

Are you sure, I thought the idea was for World News to move in before the olympics, with Newsnight and Sunday Politics, with September for more bits and early 2013 for the rest?

Much of the infrastructure required for the circuits between TVC and BH is in use elsewhere in London this summer, which is one reason you won't see anything live from there just yet!

Really? I always thought that was just a projected graphic.

I'd side towards it being projected. Surely if the red panel was actually behind the screen then anything being projected through it from the newsroom behind would have a red stripe down it? Unless the angle of the projection was very odd.

I hadn't thought of that - and indeed the red stripe onscreen doesn't quite line up with the 'real' red line - though I accept that may be because of refraction.

I think the Sport studio had smart glass in the mid 90s, when they had this set (TV Ark pic)

I remember seeing Steve Rider appear on Going Live (or would it have been Live and Kicking by then?) doing a behind the scenes piece, and demonstrating that the window behind him could either show the people behind him gathering results etc or projected images.

This is (I think) the same set, redressed with MOTD graphics on the screen

It was definitely a projected graphic - when you saw it on screen, the quality was nowhere near as good as it seems in that cap.

I think it'd be good if each is a a ticker from news channels! Like World News, News Channel, and then any other BBC News programmes on.
