Imperial College London submits plans for BBC site

Imperial College London has submitted outline plans to create an academic campus on a former BBC site at White City after it ceases operation.

The institution’s proposals, drawn up by architecture firms Aukett Fitzroy Robinson and PLP Architecture, include plans for an 87,900sq metres development with research and teaching facilities, plus commercial and residential space.

Imperial West project director John Anderson said: "Imperial West will enable the college to expand upon the success of its South Kensington site to create a second, open access academic campus that provides the physical infrastructure for world-class research and teaching, leading-edge facilities for business development and technology transfer, and create an attractive environment to live and work in."

He said that the redevelopment scheme could create more than 3,000 long-term jobs.

The BBC put the site up for sale in June last year after operating from location since 1960, and it expects to cease operations there at the end of 2013.

How much of TVC is listed? I was under the impression it was the doughnut and studio 1 at least.

I believe this relates to a building that was used by BBC Worldwide and they have since vacated and Imperial purchased last year.

The listing is for "BBC TELEVISION CENTRE, INCLUDING THE MAIN CIRCULAR RANGE EXCLUDING THE SPUR, THE ORIGINAL SCENERY BLOCK AND THE FORMER CANTEEN" - full details at English Heritage.

That's right - it's the old Woodlands site, on the other side of the A40.

I am hearing a rumour that BBC Worldwide may move into television centre... Can anyone confirm this?

I wouldn't think so, TVC is getting sold off, or so I think it is last time I heard...

I dunno - if the studio operation is going to remain for as long as it's in demand and profitable, there's going to be a lot of empty office space surrounding it which may as well be used. Perhaps they're just thinking about consolidating (if it is true)?

The whole west London property strategy is a bit of a mess at the moment, I've lost track of what the "official" line is!

I've heard the same rumour about Worldwide too. It's not as far fetched as you think. The building WW is currently in (Media Centre) was also identified for disposal in DQF announcements. The other big tenant BBC Vision is due to move to BH early next year. Media Centre doesn't contain any broadcast infrastructure of note, so no big decomission required to sell it off once WW and Vision have gone.

And would a long term tenant moved into the listed office space in TVC enhance the value of the building freehold?

What's the three white rectangles and one black one?

I can confirm that they are whiteboards, saw them yesterday. Smile

Wow! Look what they've done to the background of the BBC Sport Centre studio for the Olympics football draw. Looks really good from this angle!

Oh, they're using the secondary set. Has this been seen before on World or elsewhere?

Hmm - work has been underway on the old Woodlands site (where BBC Worldwide were based for many years - the other side of the Westway) for a while now (the old site was largely demolished - apart from some of the former-BBC Club sports facilities I think) - so I'd be surprised if they were only just now submitting planning?

Maybe Imperial are looking to expand from the Woodlands site to the Media Village site - which is very close by?

I'd hear similar rumours that BBC Worldwide were looking to move to TVC, at least temporarily. Most of BBC Vision is moving from the Media Centre to W1 within 12 months I believe, and BBC Worldwide are the other main tenants of the Media Centre.

I'm surprised by that, hope they don't decide it cheaper to move out of the main set all together.

I'd like to see the secondary set used on The Football League Show if it was to ever move away from IMG's facilities, or The Super League Show if that was to ever move from Leeds. Using that set would have worked well for the Super Bowl instead of doing the quick change over with MOTD 2, it would have looked good if they'd changed the yellow colouring behind the pundits to red and reflected some stars on it.

I'm quite surprised by that myself, especially since it'll feature the big title deciding match the two Manchester teams.

Perhaps it's to do with cost, or they're just using it for the sake of using it.
