Indeed - it seemed like a pre-evacuation warning on Football Focus: the announcement ending 'please wait for further instruction'.

That said, it was loud and interrupted the show quite badly during the start of a discussion bit, so they then went into another VT a lot quicker than expected - and never returned to the North East derby topic.

C'mon facilities team - sort it out!

Why is a pre-evacuation warning sounding in a TV studio? I thought someone said the BBC used a light to warn in these situations.

The alarms I believe were installed by the MediaCity developers, not the BBC (we have the same alarms in the building I'm based in on MediaCity). They don't have standalone fire alarms, the PA system is the fire alarms, with flashing lights on the sprinklers also being used. Clearly the developers decided to install them in the studios for some reason.

That is a different announcement to the one I've heard, which says there is an emergency and to evacuate immediately, so I would guess that one is for an alarm being triggered either in another part of the building or one of the nearby buildings.

Thanks. Presumably the BBC is in the hands of the landlords to have any adjustments made.

Or Peel had no idea where the BBC were going to put the studios...

but the BBC in Brum at least have an orange light and a red light for studios on transmission or with an audience and a sounder that sounds 45 seconds after the red light comes on.

The alarms are a flaming nightmare. Some bits of the BBC have been here a year already but Peel are still dragging their heels. CBBC recording are interrupted every week at the same time by the sounder for the fire drill, which you can switch off in the gallery, but not in the studio - as opposed to the other way round which would be logical.

I think there's a point where this moves from being an understandable irritant to a serious problem. Needless interruption of live programming is a problem. Some viewers were complaining that their segment got cut on Football Focus. Fine, no harm done.

However, at the end of the show they did a bit on the Gary Speed memorial match, leading into a sombre VT. The potential for much greater embarrassment is never far away - should it have happened then.

I was about to ask how do the BBC deal with the weekly test given that the alarms can be heard in the studios (I presume it is on a Friday, which is when ours takes place). I'm guessing it can be turned off in the 5 Live studio, otherwise the test would interupt that each week.

Unfortunately having been on MediaCity a few months now, I get the impression (as do many others here) that there are a lot of things Peel Holdings simply haven't thought through.

Easy on the eye, or what! I don't particularly mind what studio he presents from. Wink

There was another fire alarm during Richard Bacon's show on Thursday, and now Football Focus has just been interrupted. Happening a little bit too often!

The one on Thursday was a pre-arranged test. On his podcast, Richard explained that he, the production team and Stephen Mangan (who was his guest at the time) all had notes to say that they didn't have to evacuate - this is the normal thing they do at the BBC for broadcast-critical staff, I remember having one at TV Centre once

It is happening a lot at Media City it seems, earlier in the week Michael Palin was on Bacon's programme and there was a discussion about how the 5 Live emergency tape starts with an old Bacon/Palin interview and it had aired a few times recently.

In W12, facilities hand out "fire exemption passes" when an evacuation drill due to occur. I always hang on to mine in case it confers some sort of magic flame-retardant properties on the bearer.
