Is it now possible to reduce the height taken up by a lighting grid if only LED or halogen lamps are used?

Not really, LED fixtures are similar in size to their predecessors, because you either need the optics (hard edged sources) or the size (soft edged sources). There are heat and weight benefits with using LED which means the supporting infrastructure (rigging / air con) doesn't neccessarily need to be as large as a "conventionally" lit space.

[off topic]Halogen is old-skool as far as professional lighting is concerned, having been in use for many decades.

Yes It could definitely be Studio E, the thing that threw me was the ceiling in Studio E is quite low.

It appears to be low: but we've never really been able to see it against anything we can scale, have we?

Desks and Chairs are a common size...

Ah, I'd forgotten about that picture, which I think makes the studio looks considerably bigger than I originally thought.

I believe that Gavin has plenty of knowledge the subject of commercial lighting, so may be able to respond on that point.

As it happens, I've had a four year break from that sector, but signed a contract yesterday to return to the industry next month.

Which is nice.

No doubt I'll have plenty to say when I see what's new in the marketplace, but unless they've changed the laws of physics, I'll stick my neck out and say there's no substitute for a decent height rig.

In TV studio terms, it isn't the size of the fixture that dictates the height, it's flexibility of lighting. If you have a low ceiling (or more accurately, lower lighting fixtures) then you light at a shallower angle and cast shadows on / wash out backings further away from the area you are lighting. If you have a higher ceiling (and higher fixtures) you can light from a steeper angle and thus more accurately.

Yep, Windows 7 has been rolled out across Media City UK and at W1.

So how come the lighting in TC7 is far worse than that in N6!?

(and I know I'll get those people who work in the industry saying I'm wrong, but as a punter, I think N6 is nice and bright and crisp, TC7 all a bit dull and wishy-washy).

Head's up for fellow TV Forumers - Newsround is going to look a little bit different today at 5pm. Problems with their studio mean they're coming from SQ2 - the North West Tonight/new Breakfast studio.

Will be interesting, might clear out the sofa and bring in the Newsround sofa with Newsround colouring and images on the screens. Or they might just stick the presenters in front of one of the screens with no wide shots of the studio.
