ITV woke up to the idea that TV needs to be made in studios in when they needed to upgrade Emmerdale refitting YTV. Thompson needs to admit he was wrong and move everything into TVC quickly and flog of the rest of the surplus London property. Surely some bright designer could fit Albert Square into W12 - nothing is impossible. You then have a money making site with the studio business bringing money into the BBC coffers.
Looking at that report I can't see how Cardiff & Salford can absorb the other departments. As for Bristol that was being run down - now its suddenly going to house factual. Has the penny dropped that the MailBox isn't fit for purpose - no one mention Pebble Mill.

What a bl00dy mess.

Quite, if they are moving out of White City then that's over a decade of property strategy out the window. The Media and Broadcast centres were built to be the replacements for all their other West London buildings - which it has been - it's only the 3 White CIty buildings and TV Centre left now. Broadcasting House certainly can't house everything, BBC Worldwide are in a 'White City' building too, as are Red Bee

It does all seem rather ridiculous. I'd agree with the disposal of White City if they amalgamated it into TVC and made that the main home; keep news at BH and have everything else at TVC.

Surely it's now clear that the most valuable land they own is the White City area? None of it is listed, so they could sell it and make an absolute fortune.

So is the Media Village meant to be going too? I thought they just meant the White City building itself.

The latest in the Guardian's speculation articles...
Quote:
BBC plan to quit west London and cut more jobs
Mark Thompson, the BBC's director general, is expected to announce on Thursday that the BBC will quit its entire west London home – possibly selling the land to Chelsea football club – as part of radical plans that will see more staff moved out of the capital to Salford and elsewhere.

As per DarkestDreams I think if they were to sell White City it would make sense to move those operations into Television Centre. I imagine bits of TVC that aren't listed (East Tower?) may still be demolished & land sold off.

'Phased but full' exit from all West London buildings confirmed. Madness. Also, news that BBC Three will probably move to Salford in the next few years.

Also on that page, an awful BBC News Channel box. Clearly the graphics department has been hit already.

Sounds like 5Live moving to Salford very soon...

Left TV Centre for last time tonight. Will miss many people, but not the food. Or the carpets. Looking forward to sparkling new building!

EDIT: In fact they're broadcasting from there live now - and you can watch!

Indeed, 5Live Drive starts broadcasting live from Salford on Monday, with the rest of the network gradually moving up over the next month or so. Tony Livesey/Stephen Nolan were the first broadcasts for 5Live at Salford, starting a few weeks back moving from Oxford Road.

You know, I'm sure there used to be a concise numerical moniker that differentiated the rolling news channel from the wider BBC News department.

What a silly idea that was...

Yes. BBC leaving West London within a decade. TVC, White City, Media Centre, Broadcast Centre and the peripheral buildings.

BBC Worldwide have just sold the BBC Magazines division (which is partially based in the Media Centre but presumably could move out to non-BBC premises).

Suspect Broadcast Centre will be the last one to be vacated (if they say within a decade then that means 2020-2021?)

Questions being asked about how much space will be spare in W1 - even after the BBC World Service and News cuts.

Also questions being asked how many empty desks are in Salford, Cardiff and Glasgow (answer - there might be quite a lot of space there)

Very little, so we keep on being told. That's why the plan was to move our department to the Broadcast Centre when TVC closes. Um...

A friend who's recently relocated to Salford seemed surprised that there might be space for 1000 more staff up there.

It does beg the question as to how long Red Bee's lease on the Broadcast Centre is and how long their contract with the BBC lasts for.

If it might be 10 years before they need to get out so that's plenty of time to relocate and of course the technical kit will all be due for an upgrade before then anyway. However by then they could well be out of contract with the BBC so playout could move to an other company or in-house meaning that they won't have any use for the Broadcast Centre
