This probably isn't the right place to ask, but in the above video at 2.50, there's this area of N6:

Is that a rear-projection screen, and was it ever used on air?

wasn't that the CSO for UK Today? Thought it used to be a green screen though.

One thing I like about that video is it shows the effort that went into building an actual set rather than just a wall of screens. It's a shame we lack that at the moment.

It's like the weather studios I think, it has blue or green backlighting (I don't need to tell you, I'm sure you knew! But someone might not!).
It could also be a rear projection screen but the space between it and the wall isn't big enough.

Was that much of an issue when they shared TC7 in early 2008? I can't see why Newsnight can't rehearse before the Ten, vacate and then move back in again, perhaps even moving Newsnight back fifteen minutes. I just can't see them having a studio just for Newsnight and the weekend programmes like The Politics Show.

Unless the Ten will come from the News Channel studio with the One and Six from the TC7 equivalent? Time will tell I suppose...

Or could all the national bulletins come from the news channel studio?

When (and why) did the Ten share with Newsnight?

Don't forget that as well as Newsnight and the weekend stuff, there's Hard Talk and Newswatch and other pre-records that use TC7. Is Newsround going to Salford with CBBC?

I was under the impression that the BBC jut didn't 'do' live newsroom backdrops on the national bulletins. If I remember rightly, the cream era had a timeshifted video of the newsroom to avoid any accidents.

From 1988-93 the 9 o'clock news (if not all national bulletins) came from a studio built in the newsroom, so that had a live view behind the presenters.

When N6 was being refurbished for the News Channel's move from N8, the 10 came from TC7 to allow them rehearsal time. Newsnight started a few minutes late during this time, to allow the presenters to swap over.

Yeah that's the UK Today set, after it stopped being a News 24 simulcast it came from a little set opposite the main nationals set. The added backdrop was just the red bank of monitors used on N24 at that time (and the UK Today bulletins actually came from the N24 set during Breakfast because it was unused at this time).

I can't find the exact quote, but I think it was from Noggin in the News logistics thread.... they knocked a hole in the wall of studio N3 through to the newsroom. It wasn't used for all national bulletins, just the 9 and the non-named ones like during daytime and the weekends

No - it was a CSO green (I think) backing that was used for UK Today. Have a feeling it was a green lightbox rather than cloth or paint (but it was a long time ago now!) - so looked black when switched off. Not back projection.

Just the Nine - and it wasn't a "studio built in the newsroom" - it was a studio (N3 I think) which shared a wall with the newsroom, and the wall was removed! It was only used for the Nine during the weekdays (and possibly daytime summaries?) - the One and Six still came from their White and Blue look studios respectively. (Before the "branding" "corporate" "VR" set arrived)

The Nine from the Newsroom look was regarded as a bit of a turkey internally (though it was the first Lambie Nairn design?) as the bulk of the people left at 9pm in the news operation were working on the Nine, so not at their desks and usually either in the gallery or in edit suites. So effectively the backdrop should have been an empty newsroom... They usually persuaded the few people who were left in the newsroom to sit in the back of shot...

ISTR that the titles were such a tight in that they started with a frame of chroma-key - and effectively 'cut themselves up' when they were run...

It was used for daytime summaries too, wasn't it? By 9pm it looked empty.

My least favourite look, and the music was harsh and thrashy sounding.

There's a version knocking around on a late 80s Quantel showreel with an electronic demo version of the music... It sounded even worse with synth-brass...
