That is a great example of how to successfully create a clever, different, functional and stylish studio used for an hour of regular programming a day. I can't help but think that would be little better than N6 if used for a full-time news channel. There needs to be some life to the studio of a news channel - something distinctly lacking from N6.
DO
I think the issues with N6 are less to do with the space, or presence of projection cubes as a set (lightboxes would be a waste of time for a 24/7 set - you couldn't change them - better off with projection cubes), and more to do with the way that they use it. It doesn't matter how flashy and grand your studio looks, if you only use it in one way over and over again, it will get boring. *cough* Sky News *cough*
Personally, I would like to see more than one set / presentation area in the studio, like N8 and N9, and being able to use other areas of the news centre - e.g. business coming from the actual newsroom floor. Needs one locked off camera and a big plasma.

Just seeing the NC interview do an interview with two guests both in separate DTL studios at Millbank makes me wonder whether after the move to BH there will be a need for a bigger desk or something like the pod areas in N8 where a longer-form interview can be carried out.
Presumably by moving to BH more of the guests they send to Millbank for DTLs will be able to appear in the studio.

They just have to put the News Channel in there. It's on view air from 0830-1800/1830-2130/2200-0100 every weekday. World News is on just for top of the hour bulletins and the odd 30 minute programme isn't it.
Also, why make the News Channel backdrop a virtual recreation of what will be occupied by another channel?
Finally - we pay for the BBC, the rest of the world don't. The BBC is British, it's ours, we'll have the best studio. Thank you!

Looks like there's only one newsroom studio from this angle. The studio does look quite big in this photo though, certainly larger than in photos I've previously seen.

Yep - it works well in the small studio that BBC Washington have - where you can use small vertical plasmas (which are usually a much better screen solution for studios than projectors)
You could achieve a good result using 103" - or even 150" - plasmas in a bigger studio - but it would be pretty costly...
Scale costs money - big money.

I definitely agree Moz! It's a convincing argument! Why on earth didn't they build two newsroom sets?!
noggin: I'd definitely love to see the 150" plasma; Panasonic make one. Also, why have the newspapers complained so much about the cost of BH, as if licence fee payers are contributing to it? On the BH website, it says that private investment has paid for the building.
Considering that the building will house the whole News service, incl. World Service, and also a large part of Radio, for many years, it is worth the money, plus efficiency drives other costs down. Why not buy a few large plasmas?! I was reading that the glass cone thing at BH cost £1/2 million as well!

Is there a definitive statement as to how many studios there will be in the new BH? Earlier in the thread something was quoted which said four, five is another figure being quoted, and an article on the Guardian website says six. Is part of the confusion that the existing studios for BBC London, BBC Arabic and BBC Persian being counted?
It will be interesting to see if the BBC have the sense to go for galleries that are not tied to one studio, as discussed earlier in this thread. It would offer much more flexibility, especially for the News Channel dealing with breaking/live events when they clash with BBC One bulletins.

Now, if they'd only moved Breakfast to BH, and had the studio at plaza level with windows, we'd have had a serious contender to "Today" which, IMHO, is the definative morning broadcast presentation
Back on topic, BH does look amazing!!!

I think it has for a while now.
Does anyone know if the 'breathing' memorial yet projects a beam of light into the sky at 10pm?
