Could BBC News not create a backup hub in Salford in case NBH goes down? They have got the sports studios and the Breakfast studio and presenters which they could use easily as backup, also Julian Woricker appears to based there on a Monday and Tuesday for You & Yours on BBC Radio 4. Unless Salford is routed via London for Breakfast and sports programmes, isn't this possible?
There's probably no technical reason why one of the Salford feeds couldn't be patched to the news channel distribution by CCA. In fact that might not be too bad an idea, if BH goes down, get the sports presenter in Salford to cover while they get Millbank ready to go.

Yes they can just route a studio to air and get a presenter to talk for an hour but in reality they'd need some content too! I've no idea if they can or have the ability to mirror everything off site but that would really be what is needed. Also I suspect that there wouldn't be the right amount/type of staffing in Salford to produce the news channel, the sports bulletins are fairly simple

Couldn't they have some basic training so they could act as a full backup? They have a big enough base in Salford surely to have a backup operation and make that the sole one. I would have thought the studios in Salford are better equipped than Millbank to deal with this. Isn't there also North West Today/Tonight staff and Breakfast staff based there so there isn't just sport? Wouldn't this also cut down cuts on transporting staff from NBH to Millbank, when Salford is already there with the staff already there. They just have to move to the studio to broadcast.
If the purpose of the exercise is to 'fill' whilst a backup studio in London is prepared, it surely makes more sense for the sports team to just do what they do best - fill the time with sports news.

The issue with using staff that are already there is that there may be enough of them and the resources to put on a very basic bulletin for a bit but then they need backup. Not only do they have other things to do but they can't work all the time. That means ferrying staff from London up to Salford instead of them hopping over to Millbank.
I'm sure they have got some sort of plan to use Salford but I'd have thought that would be in the case where they can't get into either Broadcasting House or Millbank - that would be a huge incident of course!
They were handing out flyers to people visiting the public exhibition today, including one of their celebrity supporters, Jean Boht. (No, I'd never heard of her either...)
The main ring is going to be hotel accommodation, and the outer ring (with a big plaza in between) will be private housing, with up to 1000 apartments and houses around the site. It's a bit odd seeing drawings of the third floor where they've just sliced off the centre wedge - the room in which I'm now sitting will just be thin air!
the new East Tower takes up around the same footprint, but will be 5 storeys taller, and has an interesting kink in the middle of it.
I do like the large lettering which will be along the front of Wood Lane.

Never heard of Jean Boht? She was pretty famous as the matriarch, Ma Boswell, in the sitcom Bread back in the day. Married to the composer Carl Davis.

I wonder how many people come up to her and say 'she is a tart!'

The actual tower bit is nearer Wood Lane by the looks of it. The lettering is nice, obviously based on the original signage, although it looks a bit more italic. I'm surprised to see that they're still planning on having the BBC logo on TC1

Talking of Jean Boht, I saw an ad in our local rag advertising one of those tours where you have a group of singers singing a selection of songs from a particular genre.
(ISTR this one has wartime songs!)
Jean is compering the show, but looking at the singer list, there is one Graham Bickley listed.
Didnt he take over from Peter Howitt as Joey Boswell?
Wonder if there will be a bit of banter regarding this?
