One interesting aside to all this relocation is the bizarre effect on Radio 3.

The network stays in London, yet the BBC Philarmonic was moved to Salford. The amount of travelling for presenters and no doubt production staff between the two centres seems to be growing too. Most weekends the Breakfast programme originates out of Salford now yet it's presenter frequently presents two or more events in London during the week, adding to the travel km.

Wasn't the BBC philharmonic in Oxford Road though? Isn't this nothing new?

Yes, the BBC Philharmonic has only ever been based in Manchester/Salford. It's never been based in London.

Indeed, it's been there since 1922

It does seem to be forgotten that there was quite a bit of network production in Manchester before the move to Salford, not everything that's there now moved from London

So that's it - Radio 1 is now entirely NBH based. Last show from Yalding was Grimmy this morning.

Love that they had the Radio 1 party last night, all turned up with hangovers to do one last show amongst the party debris, and have now left! Ha ha!

Apologies if this has already been discussed...this is a long thread!

What's the long term view for Strictly Come Dancing? Will it remain in London or move to Salford?

Think most people think it will move to Elstree - probably Elstree Studios (where BBC Studios are setting up an interim operation before moving back to TVC) rather than Studio D at the existing BBC Elstree.

"Think"?
It is - here's the official press release..

Where does it say Strictly is moving to Elstree in that press release?

It says that The S&PP operation at TVC currently provides facilities to Strictly, and that S&PP are moving for an interim period to Elstree. Nowhere can I see it say that Strictly is moving to Elstree... (Though many expect it will I'm not aware that any announcement has been made)

(Remember Strictly It Takes Two originally came from a 3rd party facility - The Hospital - and before that the BBC Three precursor came from Waterfall Studios - so Strictly hasn't always been a universally in-house production.)

It would certainly be more likely to move there than Salford, though. It's right to say in this thread that although MediaCity is up and running, and certainly bigger than the old Manchester base, most programmes will still be made in and around London. Indeed, on the TV Studio History website, it says, "Andy Waters [Head of Stuios] has predicted that the centre will be running at 'full capacity' by 2013. This (according to Broadcast) represents utilisation of 50%-60% which is the best he believes can be practically achieved."

They've got a nice, big studio in Glasgow which programmes are just as likely to be made in as they are in Salford.

Well I am actually surprised by how much production has actually moved to Salford. The 'National Lottery In it to win it' have switched to Salford from Glasgow and they have just recorded 16 episodes there. Clare Balding's new Saturday night game show 'Britain's Brightest' has also recorded there. The Voice 'Blind Auditions' are also currently being recording there and I think Who Dares wins has moved to Media City too. It looks like there will be more Saturday night shows recorded in Salford next year than in London!

That is just looking at Saturday nights and not including the likes of A Question of sport, Citizen khan, Sarah Millican and John Bishop who record their shows there.
I assume let's dance for Comic Relief and Strictly will stay in London.

It will be interesting to see how the BBC plans for any Scottish independence with regards to programming in Glasgow. Like you say, big shiny building in Glasgow that could be taken over by a Scottish PSB after 2014. Would they want to commit to programming in Scotland if there's a chance that they might have to sell/downsize their operations north of the border?
