I've seen even worse on South Today, one of those pointless 'one journalist interviewing another' pieces, with one sat in the newsroom, the other in the studio.

Sometimes it's felt that a reporter in the newsroom is bringing viewers the latest on a developing story, perhaps one where the pictures from the scene haven't yet made it back to base (or a sat truck hasn't arrived on site).

But that doesn't mean they can't just walk to the studio. The point about using the DTL position when there's limited staffing is a good one, but for the main bulletins there's no real excuse to do it.

When I've seen South Today do that they've usually had a guest in the studio immediately before talking about something else, admitidly I don't watch that often but I have always assumed its because they can only put guests on one side of the desk.

Sometimes a reporter will do a two-way from the newsroom so they can read from autocue. More important in legal cases where they can't afford to adlib the script.

That's something I'll have to look out for!

Were the lifts broken, or the stairs blocked today at NBH?

What other explanation could there be for Andrew Neil doing a live DTL interview with someone sat 3 floors above Studio B?

Is the studio Andrew Neil's sat in a virtual reality set up?

No it's real.

That looked rather uncomfortable for Andrew Neill - he was almost completely turned sideways simply to look at the screen!

Only thing I can think of, is he'd just finished an interview with a guest next to him in Studio B, and there was no time in the running order (or a vt) between that guest and the DTL interviewee to move one out of the way and the next one in without crossing the camera lines.

The other option - and I don't know the building layout so this might be stupid - the guest may have been running late and so using the newsroom position might have been quicker and easier.

First edition of The World Tonight on Radio 4 from BH tonight. Pictures of studio and on their fb page.
The rest of Radio 4 will be moving within days I guess - and thinking about it Eddie Mair was away from PM all last week so I guess he was doing BH trials.

Or the guest had just been interviewed DTL by the News channel?
