They couldn't have used TVC due to SCD which isn't going to Blackpool for its finale this year. Last year The Voice didn't record their blind auditions until January. AFAIK its only the blind auditions that are being filmed there.
Last year the Blind auditions were recorded at TVC, the Battle rounds in Fountain and the live shows at the Elstree.
They're being filmed sometime in December.
So you must be right - other reasons are involved. It could be to fulfil quotas but at least HQ1 will finally be on screen (surely they'll use biggest studio - why wouldn't they?!). It was used for a game show pilot called Reflex last time I was there. Presented by Jake Humphrey but it obviously never got commissioned.
Either way, Salford will be a great backdrop for the audition shows - it will look spectacular on screen. Maybe a little windy/cold though
