Perhaps you're right, upon closer inspection the wall in render may in fact have been to the right of the video wall's current position, which they seem to have decided to keep as glass instead.

I do hope the tracks are for a remotely operated camera, they are capable of producing some very impressive shots. Belgium's RTBF uses such technology, albeit mounted on a straight track. It is capable of panning and changing height whilst in motion, allowing them to achieve these great openers and closers:

How is the background image (the shot of London) produced? Is it a projection or a screen?

Both; a projection onto a screen. Either a single screen with projector(s) installed behind, or an array of rear projection modules such as those sold by Barco.

As for the Desk supposedly "not being big enough" we've seen from the renders that two presenters can get around it quite comfortably... and for guests ... I'm going to assume they will be filmed from different angles. In a similar way to the Daily Politics/This Week at Millbank before the refit. So could there also be hidden camera positions behind the videowall looking through the gaps between the plasma screens.

The only issues would be with programmes like Dateline London or when News had three or more guests in, but there is a big Virtual Studio and B they could use if that were the case. They dont have to be in E all day... and with three other studios they could use i'd be a bit miffed if they did.

The desk in the renders was oval. Round desks, unless they're very large, look very strange if there are more than two people at it.

And I wouldn't be getting your hopes up on things like Dateline London coming from different studios, otherwise Dateline could easily come from TC7 now. It makes no sense to staff a gallery for a rather insignificant programme.

Are you certain it didn't just appear oval due to the perspective of the renders? Other renders and actual photos of the desk in the V.R. studio suggest circular design is standard.

Remember they are cutting many of the back half hour programmes. There is no guarantee Dateline, or others like it will survive.

Unless your galleries can work into any studio...

I think noggin confirmed that is not the case due to the expense, although it would have made much more sense.

If noggin is correct then the beeb are stupid, surely it makes sense to have galleries that can interact with all studios?

The beeb isn't well known for always making sensible decisions, though. The whole news operation in BH was specced out for SD, and it was only recently they changed the plans to make it all HD.

I went on a very brief tour of the newsroom today - the tracks are indeed for cameras. The 'World' studio will have a slightly larger variation, and the newsroom will have a high-level one for nice sweeping establishing shots.

Whist each studio has a fixed gallery it has been stated that the galleries have been designed so that they can be run on varying levels of staffing so are more flexible to allow any studio to be used on minimum staffing up to a full contingent presumably used in the likes of Newsnight and BBC News at Ten.

Will it be like the old tractor cam that used to be used on the roof of N8 when news 24 were using it?

Oh, I thought it was one of those projectors that doesn't project onto a screen. You know, those ones that compact spacetime to allow projections onto air?

I can't tell if you're poking fun at my comment or the one I replied to, but I was merely answering within the constraints of Moz's question. I'm not sure what other type of 'screen' they thought it could be - perhaps we could get someone from the BBC to confirm that they haven't in fact installed the world's largest plasma?

Good to hear. By newsroom are you referring to the BBC News Channel studio or the actual newsroom itself?
