Corrie loses out in top soap awards
Saturday May 20, 09:42 PM

EastEnders trounced rival Coronation Street taking seven prizes at the British Soap Awards, including the coveted title of best show.

The ITV programme won just four, including a Lifetime Achievement Award for Johnny Briggs who played Mike Baldwin in the long-running series.

Among the awards going to Albert Square were Sexiest Female for Louisa Lytton, who plays troubled teenager Ruby Allen, and her screen father Billy Murray, who plays Johnny Allen won Villain of the Year.

The London-based show also won Best Actor and Best Actress for Ross Kemp (Grant Mitchell) and Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater). Best newcomer was the Square's Charlie Clements, who plays Bradley Branning, and the award for Best Single Episode also went to the programme for its Armistice Day edition.

Corrie had to settle for Sexiest Male for Richard Fleeshman (Craig Harris), Best Onscreen Partnership for Barbara Knox and Malcolm Hebden (Rita Sullivan and Norris Cole), and Best Dramatic Performance by Bradley Walsh as Danny Baldwin, as well as the award for Johnny Briggs.

The Special Achievement Award was given to soap director Tony Prescott, who has worked as a director on Emmerdale and Coronation Street.

Emmerdale picked up four awards.

They went to: Charlie Hardwick (Val Lambert) for Best Comedy Performance; Leah Bracknell (Zoe Tate) for Best Exit, and Nicola Wheeler (Nicola Blackstock) for Soap Bitch of the Year; and Spectacular Scene of the Year for Eden Taylor-Draper and Luke Tittensor as Belle Dingle and Daz Eden, being trapped in a mineshaft.

Two awards went to Hollyoaks, one for Ellis Hollins as Tom Cunningham, for Best Dramatic Performance from a Young Actor, and Best Storyline for Becca and Justin's affair, played by Ali Bastian and Chris Fountain.

Disappointing result for Corrie as far as Best Soap goes but not totally unexpected I dont think knowing how they are often robbed of these awards. However nice to hear that Barbara Knox won her award! And great that Bradley Walsh got something as well. Johnny Briggs award is very much deserved, and I kind of expected he would get this as he has just left after 30 years so a great tribute to him.

Nice to see Hollyoaks win a couple, but Emmerdale got more than they deserved IMHO.

Great news for the bbc allround,Itv has been trying to turn over Eastenders a few times in the lastyear or so.And infact won most of them but Eastenders winning 3 awards in what some say is a poor year really does shut up the likes of Itv,Ally Ross and Gary Bussell. It just proves no matter how hard things get you can never put a good old Drama Soap down.EastEnders are on the way back up

Firstly, you don't write the name of the third channel "Itv"

Secondly, since when has Itv slagged off EastEnders or "turned them over", whatever that means?!

Well by my maths ITV soaps won 8 awards in total, not a bad tally by any account.

It's funny the results these award ceremonies throw up sometimes, but it's viewers that count and in that respect it's been a knockout for Corrie every week since the first week of January. The viewers are voting with their remotes.

Notice that most of Eastenders awards were voted for by the viewers, with only 2 voted by the panel. For some reason the public often vote EE, maybe the source of the voting forms is in a magazine that more EE fans read. Wink Or maybe EE fans are more likely to vote in these sort of things than Corrie fans.

Infact Emmerdale seem to be the most popular as far as the panel awards go this year getting 4, with EE and Hollyoaks getting 2 from the panel and Corrie 3.

Anyway im glad Bradley Walsh got something, I voted for him to get Best Actor and Sexiest Male but at least someone from Corrie got Sexiest Male which makes a change.

How the hell did Ross Kemp win best actor???
He is pathetic, I hate the long pauses he takes between two words.
IMHO EastEnders didn't deserve to win Best Soap.
EastEnders is my favourite soap, along with Corrie, but I think Emmerdale deserved to win!

Probabaly because they hyped the return of Ross Kemp to EE so much, and he has been on the cover of Whats on TV most weeks since (the magazine where the voting forms are, funny that!) Bradley Walsh or Johnny Briggs should have got Best Actor IMHO, and Bill Ward should have got Villan.

What for? the popping sound effects?
And to be fair to Grant he didn't deserve the award and he added that to his award speech, Phil should have got it

Did Corrie not sweep the board last year? Who voted for them then? Rolling Eyes

Although Corrie swept the board last year, EE always manage to pick up quite a few of the 6 viewers voted awards.
