I think so, but that would have been before the product placement rules changed.
Considering Product Placement didn't exist as what we know it today, surely there was some rule that let them get around it, like it being coverage of an event, surely that would still be the case?
This was possible previously but things have changed since the introduction of product placement.
Incidentally, one of the only reasons the 2007 awards went ahead even though they weren't televised was for that very reason, to prove it was an event rather than a TV show.
The awards have repeatedly got into trouble for undue prominence of the main sponsor, and I think Channel 4 knew they would be pushing their luck this time. Fosters sponsor the event as part of their overall sponsorship of Channel 4 original comedy.
