Point of consideration that occurred to me watching the More Talent:

We all know about the laws surrounding child performers and how they can't perform legally after what seems to be 10pm. George Sampson was on the More Talent show on ITV2 tonight until the show finished at just before 11. He's only 15, he's not 16 until the end of June. So while it makes no real difference to, well anything at all really, should Sampson have been on the spin-off show while still technically a minor?

Isn't it just a rule they've put in place, rather foolishly IMO - it's not as if the kids will be ready for sleep within an hour of performing live on TV. It was most stupid with Eoghan Quigg last year on The X Factor, who was 16 anyway yet officially packed off to bed by 10.30pm.

Well I've had a poke around and the law seems to be as follows as stated under the 1963 Children Performance Regulations (amended 1968) that amends the 1933 Children and Young Persons act:

Quote:
Earliest and latest times a child may perform

These stipulations cover rehearsals and actual performances. The hours, which a child may work in performances (other than recorded or broadcast performances, which have different rules,) are limited.

A child may not take place in a performance if the duration of the entire production, including intervals, exceeds three and half-hours or if his part, or the aggregate of his appearance, exceeds two and half-hours.

1. Children under 14 must leave the place of performance by 10pm or half an hour after the performance whichever is earlier
2. Children aged 14 or over must leave by 10.30pm or half an hour after the performance whichever is earlier.
3. No child will be at the place of performance before 10.00am if the child performed the previous evening.
4. There must be at least 14 hours between the end of one performance and the start of the next.

The regulations also apply to rehearsals in terms of place and time of performance, number of days-performed etc.

Different rules apply to professional child actors aged 9+ who cannot work before 7am or after 7pm.

So that answers my own question - Sampson can stay until 11pm.

10:30 surely? It says by then or half an hour after the performance whichever is earlier. In that case 10:30 is the earliest, or am I missing something? Confused

Interesting. 1968 though - a bit out-dated really, and I imagine bedtimes now for the average 14-16 year old is considerably later 40 years on.

Ironically I doubt the law would apply to people watching performances in the audience too.

LOL - we'll find the time somewhere, but of course have to spend two minutes plugging the premium rate competition first!

To be honest though why should she get a second chance?

Erm well they have to show that - same as they have to show all the adverts they have committed to showing.

Well, they can't leave her crying on air. He HAD to promise because that became car crash TV otherwise. What can they do, scrap Paul Potts? They're running this ad break to decide what to do next... I so hope she can do it.

That infinity curve is very cool! How do they set it so it doesn't "feedback" and go whaite or black screen?

That was superb. Is it possible the background was done using pre-recorded footage?

It is incredibly unfair, many other performances haven't gone to plan this week and they've not broken down in tears and got a second chance as a result. It's just life. If she got a second chance once votes have closed, fair enough, but if not it gives her an advantage surely.

Secondly, it was quite funny watching the show fall to pieces with Ant and Dec looking rather confused on what to do, Amanda running to comfort the little girl, and cutting to plug the competition and go to an extended advert break!

Can you imagine the press reaction if they hadn't let her have another go and let her leave the stage in tears, the Daily Mail would have had a field day
