I'm a tv and broadcasting student. I am very interested in stage design on BGT. I've been sitting on 2 ideas for years and years. The 1st is a brand new set/stage design for the auditions. The 2nd is brand new location for the final, separate from the semi finals in the theatre.

If anyone can help with people to contact I'll be so grateful

Sounds interesting. You could post them in the gallery for feedback.

Contrary to expectations, it looks like they are still planning to film the Christmas special. Filming is apparently pencilled in for 7th December, just after I’m a Celebrity is due to finish.

Curiously, it suggests they’re planning to film at the Hammersmith Apollo rather than LH2 where the not live shows were filmed recently:

Well suspect that is partly due to availability but also may get away with a simpler set strike in a theatre. Fingers crossed it goes ahead though as filming that late will literally leave a hole in the schedule if cancelled.

What is the situation with the Royal Variety Performance itself?

Jumping to conclusions but in that case I wonder if this is where the auditions for the next series (they normally start in January) will be filmed and they'll be using elements of the same set/audience set up.

Might be an idea to put together a “best of BGT” type show that could be thrown into the slot in case the special gets canned again. If the special airs the clip show could always be used somewhere in 2021, possibly around the launch of the next series. If they can get 3 x 1 hour episodes out of the best bits of Catchphrase I’m sure they could put something together for BGT.

No idea on the Royal Variety. You’d have to assume it’s not going ahead unless they come up with something for early December. I guess 2021’s performance could have two BGT winners performing.

Yes I thought that too. Almost like a trial run for the auditions. Although if lockdown gets extended presumably there will be no audience for the special so that goes out of the window.

I wonder they’ll use the same location for all of the auditions next year, rather than travelling to different theatres. Would make sense to just have a base and IIRC they’ve only done London and Manchester in the past couple of series anyway.

I reckon it'll be a virtual audience for the auditions and this special anyway. Auditions in a theatre, as-live shows in a studio to keep it as similar to a normal series. And yes, I think it's very unlikely they'll be doing the auditions anywhere other than one theatre in London.

Who knows, maybe this special is sharing a stage with the Royal Variety!

Quote possibly re. virtual audience although with Strictly managing to have some sort of in-person audience (not this month admittedly) I wonder if they might try for that as well?

Could be! There’s been no date announced for the Royal Variety but equally no cancellation announcement. Arguably could make it more intimidating just doing it eyeball to eyeball with whichever royal(s) they send rather than having a theatre audience to play to.

The Hammersmith Apollo has 3000 seats so social distancing would allow them to have about 900 odd people which would make a huge difference to the atmosphere.

My guess would be that they do the auditions like this year's finals but the semis and final has a full audience depending on whether audience capacity is lifted or increased in May.

The press release explains that it will be to a virtual audience, I wonder how that will work.
