Another childhood hero gone.

Very sad for those of us who remember Trumpton & Play Away.

Dappledown Farm was a favourite when I was growing up in the late 80s/early 90s. Was a bit old for it by the time Channel 5 revived it though!

I'll be honest, I never realised that Brian narrated Trumpton. Very much remember him on Play School, and Play Away though.

I remember him most from Bric-a-Brac:

Though I do keep confusing it with Chock-A-Block...

Even though I am only 15, I can still remember been 9 or 10 years old and loving the Trumptonshire trilogy. As such, I'm just going to leave this here whilst I go and search for my DVD copies of the trilogy:

A proper TV legend whose work spanned a number of decades. A man who never seemed patronising nor took himself too seriously when presenting children's television. It's well worth listening to The Reunion about Play School on BBC iPlayer ( radio ). Brian is one of the contributors.

It really is about time the BBC released Play School and Play Away DVDs.

RIP Brian. I first remember him for Dappledown Farm as a little child, but later enjoyed many hours of his wonderful work through Channel 4 showing Trumpton and Camberwick Green early.

I remember strangely repeats of Dappledown Farm were shown on Channel 5 when it first began- possibly the only time a TV-am produced show was shown outside of TV-am itself (over 4 years after they'd gone off air)? And I seem to remember they made some new episodes after a while too.

Dappledown Farm was produced by Clear Idea which was spun off from TV-am's kids department. Founder of Clear Idea Nick Wilson was Channel 5's head of Children's at launch.

Very sad to hear this. I had the pleasure of meeting him once, and he was just as charming, funny and wonderful as he appeared on TV.
