cooooooeeeee

Now see, let me just have a moment here.
There is nothing wrong with blowing ones trumpet so to speak, however it's when people insist that there trumpet is going to be heard, and much louder than everybody else's that I have a problem. Maybe it's because I'm such a modest chap.

Anyway, Ison had some good news which he also wished to share with the forum, however, the moment the spotlight was taken away from you Kat, you didn't like it. You might think that Ison's comment was more appropriate for a chatroom, PM or over MSN because, however I can't help feeling the same for yours.

My fears for this thread have been confirmed and it's turned into a long list of people saying "well done", "congratulations" type remarks, and I have to question the motivation behind starting it. Just how many people is it you want to see say the same things over and over ?

I do wish you luck Kat with your ambitions (although I do fear for the build up of dust if you're not around). My barbed comment earlier was just further demonstration of our increasing venemous banter, but we both know you love it that way. Laughing

QUESTION: Would you put your loyalties to Look North ahead of your ambition ? For instance, would you accept a position working on Calendar ?

Sorry SE, I just wanted an excuse to use that.

What would be helpful to all and to paint the big picture is if Katherine would actually describe the nature of the work involved in the volunteer trainee position .

Helping with the record library, preparing the playlists for the shows, collecting record requests from patients in the ward and other departments, assisting with the upcoming Pilgrim Hospital Radio website (I've recently passed a web site construction course), various admin tasks such as sorting post, typing letters, creating leaflets with their desktop publishing program, converting existing library stock information from cards to holding the information on computer, distributing raffle tickets for fundraising, occasionally manning a market stall to help raise money for the station and moving on to broadcasting later on when I've learned all the basics above. Also, helping the staff with anything else that needs to be done.

I wasn't blowing my own trumpet at all - this is possibly the first good thing to happen to me in a while, I haven't had any successful volunteer/job interviews for three years (each interview I'd been to before, I'd get the now run-of-the-mill rejection letter) and some people don't seem to be able to congratulate what is to me a rare successful outcome. Do any of you know how dispiriting it is to get rejection letter after rejection letter as a result of job interviews/applications? When the success comes, you naturally want to share that with others. What is wrong with a thread of people saying 'well done'? Surely it's a lot better than one where people are bickering all the time. I was motivated to post it merely to share some good news with you. If someone else had posted something to the equivalent of mine, I'd have said congratulations or well done instead of immediately cynically thinking they're on an ego trip and then poured scorn on it which spoils things for everyone.

As with all enigmatic replies from people with 'unreadable' senses of humour which I couldn't possibly even try to understand in a month of Sundays, I immediately assume it's a p-take. I was totally confused and lost by what Ison was meaning or inferring by his comments. You must understand by now I find it very hard to read other people's minds and 'get' what they mean when they say bizarre stuff like that.

I'm not even going to bother replying to the trap of that question about Calendar. I'm sure the forum could do without another ITV V BBC argument....

Well done Katherine, I'm glad you have your foot in the door. If you make a name for yourself at this position and then manage to get on, you're probably going to get you much further in broadcasting than you would if you were the weathergirl on Look North.

Who knows, maybe in 10 years time we'll be watching the BBC News at Ten O'Clock with Katherine Birkett?

And I now have a job at Somerfield - first step to becoming head of the place Wink

And I'm also on CMP Radio now as you know - another step to finally restoring British radio to it's former glory. Hear me next week:

Tuesday 4-6pm for my Big Afternoon Show (OK, it's James Martin in the afternoon but still...)
Then on Thursday 3-5pm you may join me as I count down Europe's Top 30 - will Lumidee hold a third week at the top? Stay with CMP for the latest!

Just to add my congratulations Katherine - hope all goes well, someone as nice as you deserves a great chance. As I am a damn Southerner I won't be able to tune in but I'm sure you will be an asset to the station. And if you do make it all the way to LN I'll be the first to flick to 947! Smile

Well done Katherine! Hospital Radio is where I started, as have many in the industry. It's a perfect training ground where not only do you learn the technical stuff e.g. mic technique but also it vastly improves your musical knowledge.

BUT the main plus about Hospital Radio is that you learn how to make your links personal and 1:1 with the listener. There is no other training that can teach you this vital ingredient to succesful broadcasting for nothing!

Enjoy!

Well said, Mr Hyden. Liners, promos and inane comments are one thing but good radio can be so much more.

On the other hand, around 8.15 this morning Virgin Breakfast explored news depths of mediocrity ...... Trust me.

don't say f*ck or bugger to the ill people and i always find "tea bag - sugar - water - milk" makes a superior cuppa. it also allows you to add milk to people's taste - as opposed to putting it in first - in which case you'll be stumped if it's too milky and you'll be stood there like a lemon until the tea bag does its thing. sugar is of course optional.
