Just wondering which Breaking News banner on television news looks more effective?
1)BBC's Flashing banner
2)CNN International's banner (the one on the top of the screen)
3)CNN US's banner (on the bottom of the screen)
4)Others (only with "Breaking News" title)
I don't like the current CNN International 'breaking news' aston, mainly because it's too big, and takes up too much of the screen, especially with the rest of the screen junk at the bottom ( DOG, aston, ticker). However, from memory, it doesn't animate, which is nice for a change!
The BBC's are OK - News 24's has been over used IMO, so the effect of it has worn off. The term 'breaking news' has been given to stories which may have been suited to 'developing news', or 'news update'. I think BBC World generally have it right - smaller aston than N24, and it is used very sparingly. For this reason, it hasn't lost its effect - if the aston says 'breaking news', then you know it's pretty major news. One of the reasons that the breaking news aston on World isn't used as much is that the channel has 'news update' and 'latest pictures' logos which sit alongside the channel DOG, which is what N24 should use too.
I prefer the 'typewriter' effect that is used on News 24 for Breaking News. This instantly draws attention. Should also be used more for things like 'Latest Pictures' and 'Updated News' and go back to the red info-strap, but just for Breaking News.
Sky's doesn't move, but you get SKY NEWS FLASH and BREAKING NEWS and
BREAKING
NEWS
on the news wall with the newsroom bathed in red. Way over the top!
I think Sky's newswall wins all round, the "swoosh" as the aston comes in, the red text and the whole newswall turning bright red with BREAKING NEWS in huge letters appearing! They could do with some sirens that go off and the staff could be told to run about a bit more in the background to add to the effect.

I do think SKY's newswall is very effective, if not slightly over the top. It does certainly catch your attention when a most blue and white studio suddenly turns bright red.
I'm not too fond of the whooshing noises, but they aren't too intrusive.
I agree with Re-it-er-ate - they should have blue and red flashing lights and possibly a siren. Also, they should have some of the squares in the video screen turn to analogue static periodically and various world news channels appearing too, like in "Independence Day" and "Tomorrow Never Dies."
Whist Sky are entirely over the top in their breaking news coverage, it does command the attention that such news stories seek and for that, it fulfills its purpose. BBC News 24 overuse the Breaking News device and agreed, like World, they too should have straps or astons dedicated to updates and latest pictures so as not to dilute the effect of a breaking news story.
Good point by Itsrobert. I've thought for a while that both News 24 and Sky are guilty of 'crying wolf' over Breaking News.
Giving "Alistair Campbell has arrived at the Hutton Inquiry" the same prominence as "Two aircraft have hit skyscrapers in New York" seems ridiculous.
Maybe now that 'Breaking News' has been so devalued, we could do with an alternative term for a real major incident. Something like 'SH*T HITS FAN' scrolling across the screen.
