News 24 wouldn't be used during the event of a massive story anyway.
If Diana died this weekend you would not find News 24 being constantly played out on BBC One, Two, World, Prime, America etc etc.
In the first few hours of breaking news you might but if it was during the daytime they would rush 1 or 2 anchors into N6 and be presenting from there for the rest of the day.

CNN don't use the CNN Breaking News ident that often it's just this little tag they attach on to astons that is almost always there!

During the Diana coverage, Sky used:

breaking news
live
update
latest

I've got some better shots to put up, including a nice view of the studio in 1997, looks better than the 1998 version actually!
CNN's current breaking news aston on CNN International is rubbish. The previous version with the letters in just solid white and in capitals was far better.

I would've thought they would use N8 rather than N6 - it's a larger studio, giving more room to adequately fit two anchors, plus any guests etc. Plus there are the other substudios such as the one used for business today etc, and there's also the chromakey screen, just in case someone has to stand inside a diagram.

N6, however is smaller and, although it does have the plasma display on the left (the rectangular window as Huw describes it) it does not have as much room for guests to talk rubbish.

Looking at the BBC's policy on royal deaths - it seems they would make a flash announcement if needed in conjunction with News24 and that would run until N6 could be set up with presenters and a crew. There are then plans to cross via a static image from News24 to N6 to broadcast coverage on all BBC networks. There are also plans for changing the look, astons, etc. They are all on the BBC Gateway system thing which I was looking at yesterday...

Yesterday, when Ronald Reagan's daughter died, all of the news networks used the breaking news astons/graphics -- but none used the idents or music.

Did Ronald Reagon's daughter die? We seemed to have missed that here...

Also, did anyone see Sky News this afternoon - they broke into an advert to take you live to Sky News' balcony in Jerusalem where they thought a bomb had gone off on a bus just hours after the apalling bomb earlier... false alarm though! Breaking News aston said 'Bomb bear Sky News in Jerusalem'!

I was listening to CNN when that was annouced, the transcripts can probably be found on CNN.com

With credit to Sky, the 'explosion' was reported on the BBC - if 10 mins later and without pictures, and about 20 mins later on CNN. Also, from looking at the live pictures they had the place had been swarmed by police which would've suggested another bomb.

All of the major TV networks have their bureau next to each other in Jerusalem, overlooking the city. Nice vantage point.
