Andrew Marr is stepping down as the BBC's political editor after five years, to present the replacement for Breakfast with Frost.
Its presenter of 12 and a half years, Sir David Frost, is retiring when the current series of his Sunday morning political programme finishes at the end of the month.
Mr Marr, a former editor of the Independent newspaper, will step down from his current role in the summer before starting his new show in September.
BBC News director Helen Boaden said that Mr Marr, who took up his current post in May 2000, had been a "brilliant" political editor.
"He has made a huge impact with our audiences who appreciate his wit and vitality as well as his tremendous knowledge, analysis and insight," she said.
"We shall miss him in this role but look forward to the unique range of qualities he will bring to the world of politics on Sunday mornings."
She also paid tribute to Sir David: "We will also miss David's enormously engaging and informative weekly input. For more than a decade, we have benefited from star guests and his inimitable way of getting the best out of them."
Details of the new programme, including its name, will be announced nearer the time.
