Cable TV has actually been around since the late 1950's; it's original purpose was to carry the two existing channels to households who were not within range of a transmitter and so could not receive them through an aerial.
To this day in many areas if you have a TV with a VHF tuner and connect the cable TV cable directly to the aerial socket, you will be able to tune in BBC1 and ITV on the original VHF frequencies for that area.
