In my view the topic was wholly unappropriate - you can't make a joke out of a topic like that but I think some people have overreacted in my view Channel 4 should have apologised after showing it and refused to show it again but The Sun (and I assume the Mail) calling for Channel 4 to have its broadcasting licence revoked was a huge overreaction - it was a huge and sick error of judgement but for The Sun to then go on to praise Big Brother is hypocrasy to me.
I wasn't offended by it, but i'm not going to be signing up for the Morris fan club. It was OK, but not brilliant, the best part was the duped celebs which was brilliant, that they managed to push it so far, but over all, it watch a repeat, but then again i'll watch repeats of any half decent show. Probably not worth the hassle of getting so many complaints for the peices of humour, just stick the celebs bit in as a short, five minute thing, and save the hassle.
I simply cannot stomach reading the Mail anymore. It's quite possibly the worst paper in Europe.
Homophobic and Conservative supporting.
As a cyberfriend of mine once said:
It's a 'fascist rag'.
How it managed to win Newspaper of the Year is beyond me.
BB
BBC Choice
Most papers never win paper of the yeah - they just award themselves the title - at one point last year there were 7 daily newspapers all sporting the 'Newspaper of the year' slogan
Well there is an offical 'Paper of the Year' awards.
The Inde won it in (I think) 2000.
I've only seen the Mail with Paper of the Year on them this time.
Yeah they all award themselves Newspaper of the year, currently (from memory last time I carefully studied a newspaper rack) it was just the star and the independant, but the mirror and mail were going on about being the best , but without saying 'Newspaper of the Year'.
The Independent has improved vastly of late.
But The Times still appeals to me. It's got resources unmatched by the others and the reporting is still excellent, and i'm glad they've finally declared support for Mr Blair.
It's presentation has improved a hell of a lot recently.
The Guardian is certainly in the top 3, still excellent reporting and fantastic web facilities and good style of presentation, which matters when you're trying to read a 3 foot tall and 2 foot wide newspaper! Well, perhaps not that big.
Out of the extra section, i.e. G2, Times2 and the Inde Review, the Inde is probably the winner there.
In terms of websites, The Guardian has a fantastic service but the Torygraph has just revamped its site and it now looks fantastic.
The Inde has given its site a makeover and I think it looks worse now than it did before!
The Times still have a long way to go I'm afraid to say.
BTW, Edwina Currie is doing a programme on BBC Radio Five Live (as she does every weekend) about Brass Eye, or at least it's related to it.
SN
SkyNews
Brass Eye was a programme not about child sex itself, but how the media portrays it. The programme mimicked the way the news programmes doctor figures when it gave out the statistic of 84% (think it was that) of adults have had sex with a child if you count a child as anyone under 30!
It is newspapers like the Daily Mail and the News of the World who criticised the programme that build up the mob mentality in Britain against pedophiles. Their motive is purely circulation. The News of the World's campaigns 'For Sarah' & the 'Named & Shamed' was clearly implemented to take advantage of the public atmosphere last summer. Rebeckah Wade never even appeared on television to defend her newspaper's actions.
