Were the cubes real, computer generated, or did they look real, and you couldn't tell.

The cubes where actually real, just placed all around the scene with the sun shining off them... looked good.

I got the impression the blocks were moving along the beach like the old BBC Choice blocks. A bit like The Prisoner.

Great big 7-foot tall yellow and blue cubes chasing people screaming for their lives into the sea.

You mean a track record that includes Yorkshire and Tyne Tees having regional idents throughout the hearts period?!

That'll be from the period when Tyne Tees had two completely different logos then...

Hardly Tyne Tees' fault - GMG wouldn't pay. Actually they'd have done better using the TTTV idents for everything, even if they had to leave the announcerless (even better - and it would have saved them all that money). Back on topic...

So you're backing my original point, that Carlton are better at this sort of thing than Granada!

The opposite dear, although I did not make it clear. At least GMG kept the names, instead of calling them all Carlton (or Granada in this example). Carlton's 1999 idents may have been flashy, but it couldn't match the Central Cake, or the Westcountry W. And even before 1999 they started taking Central to pieces, replacing the cake with a Carlton-esque design.
GMG may have had bad taste in design terms, but at least they left some regionality, unlike Carlton Westcountry & Central, which just seemed to be Carbon Copies of London.
Of course none of this matters now because ITV, in my oppinion, is dead.

Yes , the dead hand of Michael Green was evident from the day Carlton took over Central - what was the first thing to go ? - Spitting Image ,one of the best comedy shows around.
BUT MAGGIE DIDN'T LIKE IT , and Mike got his franchise through the old mad cow , so there you are. A sure-fire ratings winner ditched because of the old " you scratch my back ...... " swindle.
Where's whataday with his voice-over anyway ? Confused

And some would say that this confused their regional branding more than Carlton's rebrand ever did.

People often treat Granada a lot better than Carlton when it comes to branding, just because of the Central/Westcountry rebranding. In my opinion that's a very misguided view.

Bollox. Spitting Image was axed because it ran out of steam.

WOW!!! They look really good! Now all we need now is some classic Central jingles from 1997-1998 and the word CENTRAL under the ITV1 logo and it'll be great! Could anyone mock this up?

Remember to get some grabs 2moro!

Carlton may have dropped the Central name, but it was more than made up for by 12 hours of live announcements from great regional announcers in Birmingham who had served for many years and clearly loved the job and the station they worked for.

As great as the GMG team were - they couldn't shine because of the rediculous continuity arrangements. But perhaps without it, we wouldn't have heard Maggie at her finest.

Central may have lost it's name - but it never lost the spirit and the continuity was second to none when compared with that of GMG. The names of GMG may have stayed but for many, just because they saw "Tyne Tees" or "Granada" on screen didn't mean they were watching the same kind of station they were 10 years ago. Whereas with Central and I'm sure Westcountry - the spirit of times gone by was still there.
