It's interesting to think that if they did, and just used some simple (one would assume) tricks in TVC, they could play out regional idents between programmes ... Just that would have an amazing affect on the viewers, and how they relate to the channel.
Mind you, I think the BBC does do more regional programming than you give credit ... And don't forget to take into account all of the local radio and websites the corporation produces. Don't see ITV doing that

ITV doesn't have license fee money supporting it. Personally, I wouldn't like to see the BBC becoming the new regional network because ITV can do what they like, but I wouldn't be happy the BBC 'wasting' my money on programmes I can't receive.

Perhaps not idents (I mean, what difference is the words "South West" under "BBC ONE" going to make?), but what about more promotions for regional programmes (e.g. Inside Out, the regional bits of the Politics Show etc.)? The only time I see regional promotions is either before or after regional programming.

I think the idents would make an enourmous amount of difference ... I mean, how UNregional has ITV become with the new national idents? Besides, it's something that would cost small fry to impliment.
Regional promos are going to be more widespead in the main programming in the coming year ... keep watching this space.
ITV, well Granada, did spend loads of money on internet related stuff, do you remember g-whizz? They were building the launch up for months, there were even adverts on buses, but it seemed to vanish. ITV did try, but like ITV Digital, the venture seemed to fail.
The crippling problem with ITV, is that it is not a single company. A few years ago, this enabled the network to target local viewers, but now it doesn't seem to be a priority of ITV, and now, all these different voices pulling the company in different directions ensures that the network is directionless. It's starting to get itself together now, but I think the damage has already been done, and in 5 or 10 years time, I suspect the whole ITV network will be nothing more than Sky One with regional news.

True... thinking about it, it would be a good idea.
It would be better though if a unique ident was made that related to each region (if that's possible!), but I suppose that would cost too much.
I REALLY hate HTV West posted:

Regional programming is being reduced from 8th September - the 2.30pm slot is being axed. The only regional slots apart from local news will be
Sunday - 12.30, 1.15 and 6pm
Thursday - 7.30, 10.30 and 11.30pm
Friday - 11.00-12 midnight.
My region ITV1 Wales has a few opt outs though including Tuesday's at 7.30pm!
Actually the amount of regional programming isn't decreasing this time, the loss of Thursday at 2.30pm is being replaced by Thursday at 10.30pm. The average of 3.5 hours of non-news regional programmes maintained during the first half of the year looks to be continuing into the Autumn
