I saw that too, I was using the text service at the time and saw that in the little screen and thought 'what the hell?!' - I had the sound off at the time so didn't know what the story was about.
I saw Bowen on the 1, I thought he did a rather good job actually.
I wouldn't say he was a weak anchor - he does have a bit of happiness about him, not like the traditional 'just read' anchor, which is nice.
Now here's a bigger question - who is the next rising star at the BBC?

I'm really not sure who the next star will be... They obviously think Jeremy Bowen could move up to national news. Really don't know who else...any other people got ideas?!

Is it just me or did his goodbye gesture seem forced? He sounded so sinister!

This is from a BBC insider commenting on Bowen's first ever One o'Clock news:
“Well he [Bowen] didn't actually screw up, but he was so laid-back we weren't sure if we'd ever get to the end of the report. And how he manages to swagger while sitting down beats me. Still all the research shows that the ladies love him.”
Next rising star? Well, I'd put money on my idea that the latest addition (possibly excpet Verdi) to BBC Midlands Today, Ashely Blake, is destined for big things. He's young, a good reporter, a good news reader, and with a sense of humour. Give it a few years and he'll be national methinks.
