I don't want much CBBC these days but other than Blue Peter and say Saturday Mash Up, there isn't a magazine type show any more these days even across other channels.
The trouble is rightly or wrongly Blue Peter is a show that survives on its history rather than its appeal to today's generation - it does stick out in the CBBC schedules like a sore thumb.

It still does reasonably well in the ratings. It appears in CBBC's weekly top 10 BARB ratings quite regularly.
If it wasn't doing well, I don't think it would still be on. If the ratings became really bad, I don't think nostalgia would be enough to save it, and I think the BBC would rather end it on a high than keep it going and see it limp on with plummeting ratings.

Which were the presenters which weren't there, then? Seeing as the ones we'd speculated might not be were all there.

Are you a regular viewer, then, of either CBBC or Blue Peter?

oh my goodness. behind-the-scenes at #BluePeter's 60th Anniversary Special, legendary presenter Peter Purves pins Richard Bacon's Blue Peter badge on him and then tells him: "welcome back to the fold." ❤️https://t.co/fER0XdiQl2 pic.twitter.com/WWHbMDebwv

Appears to have been:
Simon Groom
Christopher Wenner
Tina Heath (not a good showing from the late 70s)
Mark Curry (unwell, but made it onto The One Show last night)
Matt Baker (actually doing The One Show, agree a shame they couldn’t give him a night off)
Edit: Gethin Jones also - a really surprising one given he does a daily radio show in Manchester...
Otherwise a full house of the surviving hosts which was impressive.
Thought they did a great job with the birthday show. As impressive in scale as anything from TV Centre.
And the first credit roll since...2008? Carmella Milne still going strong!!

I really don't understand this. I watch BP from time to time and it is a really excellent programme. Kids are still writing in to the programme in fact there are more now than in 2011. Programmes like Blue Peter and Saturday Mash Up are totally unique to the BBC now and they are programmes the BBC show be doing. Endless Drama, cartoons, comedy are all well and good but it nice to see a magazine format that kids can actually interactive with Live.

They said something about digitising their episodes to view online. I don't know if this will happen or not.

Indeed - the lack of Groom / Wenner / Heath means there was a whole missing “ team “ albeit as a group they were only there for a relatively short spell.
I agree, a good showing though.

I thought the show was rather good. Using two studios at media city was new to me and reminiscent of the good old days where Swap Shop/Superstore et al would “pop next door” to see what was going on in the next studio. The set up in the Orchestral Studio was terrific. Nice to see BP again. My kids don’t ever watch it sadly so I haven’t caught it for years and years.

I don't understand this comment, really - last night's One Show was more or less entirely devoted to Blue Peter, so Matt has made a major contribution to the birthday celebrations and it got massive exposure on primetime BBC1. But the fact is he's doing another show tonight and you can say, oh, he could have had the night off, but presumably he's contracted to present X number of episodes of The One Show a year, and he's about to miss several episodes to do the World Gymnastics Championships (and Alex is currently off for the Invictus Games as well), and he is the main presenter.
I don't know how that suggests the Beeb aren't bothered about this. John Noakes didn't turn up for the twentieth birthday!
Yes, well said. The audience seems hugely enthusiastic about the programme, they get thousands of entries to their competitions - the audience may be smaller, but it is clearly massively engaged with it. No other programme would get such a huge percentage of its audience actively participating in it. And whenever they've asked the audience what they want more of, they've often said they want more about the history of the programme.
And frankly I think it's a bit of an odd argument to say it goes on about its history too much when it's their sixtieth anniversary, if they can't do it then, when can they do it? It's not like Peter Purves is turning up every week. It's not been long since someone on this forum said they weren't mentioning their history enough!
The fact that Matt is presenting the one show this evening and can't be there probably shows how much the BBC actually care about this...
