Well, it's my holiday this week from work so Mummy has allowed me to stay up Smile I also do shift work so on some nights at this time of night, I would have just be getting home from work.

Thankfully, some of the stuff they show on telly at night normally sends me straight to sleep anyway!

What... your Mummy has let you stay up as well! Sorry, couldn't resist. It reminds me of a time back in 1992 when I was about 15 and I had an obession with staying up late and watching closedowns. Probably explains the loner bit in me!

BBC2 would be first to go at 00:30 with their OU programme followed by BBC1 an hour or so later and then Channel 4 would be last with their 5 second announcement before putting the lights out.

If that IS the finished design, I have a dun with Greg Dyke's name written on it...

What's a dun? And what has Greg Dyke got to do with this year's BBC ONE Christmas symbol?

Probably because OU broadcasts came from the self-op suite and used one announcer for both channels. There's a very telling clip in my collection of the BBC2 clock with Tim Nicholls as CA, advising us the Open University began in a few moments. Cue fadeout and picture roll - up comes the BBC2 OU ident with Mark Waddington now CA. Other clips from that night prove Mark was the BBC1 late announcer.

BBC1 was always first to go (15 mins either side of midnight usually) but if BBC1 did stay up late it had to be some time after BBC2 finished for logistical reasons. It must have been a nightmare for the schedulers - ensuring the OU always came on at the same time while making sure BBC1 was in the middle of something then!
