I doubt Blue Peter will last much longer anyway. I'm sure that garden area will be used in the years to come here and there as a presentation area for various different shows.
I think Breakfast probably use it more now than Blue Peter do anyway - and I suspect it'll be a similar story in Salford.
I don't know why they're bothering. It's clearly a gesture towards the garden for those upset about losing the one on London - but it's hardly going to be the same. There won't be any real planting features or stuff like the pond, and there won't be the space to do stuff like the huge outdoor shows of the past.

If it wasn't for the history of the show and the fact it would provoke such an outcry from those who have not seen the show for at least 30 years, I think the show would have been replaced with something with similar public service values but with a cooler name and newer packaging a long time ago. But then that would probably have been axed as well by now.
I think the issue with trying to replace Blue Peter with a "cooler" show is that BP has never been cool. It's audience is not the cool audience, it never really has been.

I had similar thoughts about the future of the show when I was considering it the other day. Of course, I'll wait until September to see if I'm being over-the-top.

Even in the sixties? The point is though TV was a different world when it started you'd have hardly ever heard a regional accent for example.
Maybe it's possible to make a One Show for kids?

Maybe it's possible to make a One Show for kids?
We already have a One Show for kids, it's called Blue Peter and it's boring.
noggin is right, Blue Peter has never been cool but now it has the added problem of being totally out of date. Cats and dogs aren't a novelty anymore and sap the energy in the studio. The studio links are dull and empty, the VTs largely uninteresting and they have outdated things like making pencil holders out of yoghurt pots. That doesn't work anymore, like like printing song lyrics in Smash Hits magazine was redundant after the arrival of the internet.
The problem with Blue Peter is that nobody will axe it due to its heritage. There was talk of changing the name of it (because "Blue Peter" means nothing to kids whereas at least with "Live and Deadly" you have an idea what you're getting) but nobody has the balls to axe Blue Peter. If they're set on keeping the show, it should be reduced to a 12 week run a year (just so they can prove they havent axed it) and maybe turned more into a magazine show like TMi or Friday Download. Yes, this would be radical and different but at least it keeps the precious brand, and all the dull stuff like looking at "London's biggest vase" can be shunted onto a new show called "Helen Explores the World!" or something.

I mean copy the format exactly, have say JLS there all show long and talk to them between the VT's.
You could even call it BPI, it would be short of axing the show so wouldn't produce as much of an outcry, but after a few years you could probably drop it or rebrand it without any fuss.

I agree that might be fun, but JLS wouldn't be up for it, Blue Peter probably couldn't afford to have them all day (and they won't go to Salford for just BP anyway) and ultimately Blue Peter isn't about hanging out with celebrities, it's about Helen growing the world's biggest turnip.

Of course, the most important/popular part of the show is the Blue Peter appeal. They could drop the show completely and just do an 8 week run called "Blue Peter Appeal" where kids can take part, Barney and Helen do stunts to raise money/awareness and kids can win badges for taking part in the appeal.

Do you have a link to any of this?
Vernon Kay keeps bigging up Friday Download on his Radio 1 show.

It'll be on the iPlayer anyway.

But I think if you were to ask the production team you would find that the makes are one of the viewers favourite items. When Tim Levell took over as editor, he changed the makes into challenges but, they were soon altered back and done straight.
I think the series had problems in the 1990's when it tried too hard to be trendy and became self-conscious about itself. However it did successfully reinvented itself during the early 2000's under editors Steve Hocking and Richard Marson. Its main problem in the past few years has been a large budget cut.

Its main problem is how they spend the budget, not the size of it.
