Just watched Blue Peter's behind the seen video on their website home page. Helen said that they had never done a really festive Christmas on the show in her 3 christmasses so she was glad they went to town this year. Andy also said they were taking it back to the old school roots. Pretty spot on there. Hope 2011 is just as good!

Have they already done the Christmas Show?
I'm sure in my day it used to go out on Christmas Eve in the BBC One (non CBBC) schedule. I could understand it going out in its normal schedule the week before Christmas, but this week is a bit too soon isn't it?

Yes, and it's all the fault of BBC1's schedulers because there isn't any CBBC in the afternoons next week, which is rubbish really. I don't even think most schools will have broken up by next Monday. Previously it would have gone out much closer, the nearest normal transmission day, even if it was, as you say, Christmas Eve.

Quite often the Christmas show would be on Christmas Eve outside of the normal CBBC block though, so it just seems less of a priority than it once was.

Part of me wonders if they revived the traditional Christmas ending because this is the last time they'll be at TV Centre and can do the "here they are coming up the hill now" bit with the choir and band coming through the studio doors? (at least in the traditional way...)

I'm pretty sure all those things were back last year - it was a couple of years ago they dropped it all.

As for scheduling - I suspect it's all down to cuts, just like they now finish for summer ridiculously early too.

Nice to see that bit of tradition, even keeping to the traditional script for the bit with the band, with "hear them coming up the hill", and "just got time before we sing the last verse...", and the original ship logo zooming on the credits. Just needed Phillip Schofield following it with in vision pres!

No, this was the first year they brought back the carol, in previous years they'd done a Christmas song to finish, but with a gospel choir or some kids or something, nothing like that. 2007 was the year zero, that year's Christmas show had none of the familiar fare, ending with a song from Booty Luv, and I wrote to Tim Levell to complain, and he wrote back saying they wanted to move with the times and that they were considering a special show for older viewers, which never happened. I've now written to Tim Levell to thank him for bringing back the carol.

Also it finished early for the summer this year, I'm thinking that was because of the World Cup which would have sent the scheduling completely haywire. They came back much earlier than usual, at the end of August, normally it wouldbe mid-September. In 2005, the summer break ran April to July rather than June to September, because the CBBC Channel wanted to have more new programming during the summer.

Quick observation, happened to see this afternoon's music compilation, was some of the skating rink footage with Andy CSO'd?

Looked like it or else the lighting was a bit strange and outlined him.

Namechecks for John Leslie and Anthea Turner from Barney on his first Blue Peter. Think we know what era he watched in! Also looks like the titles haven't been updated as they used the clean version today.
