Perhaps because if they do a competition to design something used in the show, it has to be done & finished before they start making the show?

The winning object could be used in the following series, or a spin off which hasn't entered production yet, or not seen on screen (could be for the website, pieces in a magazine etc). With no series being transmitted this year, they couldn't run a competition while it was on air, to have a winning object for use in the next series.

Brand new Blue Peter appeal launched today, and thankfully, it is realistic!! the new toaliser is amazing, back to the old format of totalisers simiular to the ones used during the Richard Marson era! hey have even got This Morning's Holly and Phil involved!
The studio looked huge today and very versatile! BP is back...again!

Really impressed with new appeal - fantastic cause and allows the viewers to become creative at the same time. The totaliser really was a nice surprise! I don't think I'll ever come round to the current studio set but its versatility was superbly demonstrated on Tuesday. I think the show's future is looking more promising then this time a few years ago. It's nice to see Blue Peter back on form again!
