The show simply isn't what Blue Peter used to be - and I think that is true for its target audience - not just us old-timers who have fond memories.

It is possible to re-invent shows successfully - though it is not easy. It is very difficult to do it in the current climate of budget cuts etc.

Of course the target audience has changed since our day, CBBC is actively targetting a much younger demographic, so the content of the programme will have changed to reflect that.

Thinking about it... its Andy's 3rd year this year, hard to believe ihe has been on the programme as long as Zoe and Gethin were. I seem to only associate him being as part of the current team, with helen and joel!!!!!!!
D'u reckon he'll be moving on soon??? It would be a shame (eeven though i don't really like him, he is a bit wierd, especially his street chavvy speech!!) because blue peter needs more presenter consistency. Agreed???

I don't know if he will move on, unless there's another CBBC project lined up for him. If he does move on I don't think it would do any harm to bring in someone who has experience, even a bit " older ".

Michael Abaslom or any of the CBBC " old guard " would be good, and if you wanted to go for something more mature, but experienced, Paul Leyshon ( who seems to have disappeared ) was a great television presenter.

Lastly I know end credits seem to be getting more old fashioned in TV land but it would be good to see a proper set of them again...

I disagree. I don't think closing credits would suit the modern day Blue Peter. I am a big fan of the current set up where the closing music (which i really like) plays out while the presenters close the show, then the closing theme tune is heard and the logo board appears. Kids aren't bothered in the slightest about who is the make-up stylist or the wardrobe woman. waste of time as the 20 seconds or so that the credits are on could be put else where. sorry to be a kill joy, but I really don't think that 'Abs' Michael Absalom would be any good. I hope the presenting arrangement stays the same, for consistency reasons.

Nice to see Helen being interviewed by Sue Barker this morning ahead of her running the london marathon. Helen has really upped her profile and this is great and she can now class herself as a very established presenter. After her appearance on Lets Dance For Comic Relief and the big publicity surrounding the success of her ultra marathon in Namibia, the blue peter bosses should be pleased beyond words about her new public status. They struck gold appointing her!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

The drop in quality in studio production terms has been huge, the increase in quality of the films has not been reciprocal. The show simply isn't what Blue Peter used to be - and I think that is true for its target audience - not just us old-timers who have fond memories.

I think the BBC’s suggestion of Blue Peter’s budget being directed away from the cost of large studios into films was just spin. According to former Editor, Richard Marson’s other new book "Blue Peter Inside the Archives"
http://www.kaleidoscopepublishing.co.uk/books-bp.html he describes after he was (unjustly) sacked that the programme had a “massive budget cut which forced it to use the small Studio 2 at TVC and to adopt a new system of making four shows every other week, two recorded and two live.” He then goes on to describe the content of the new look Blue Peter as “repetitive, and boringly ‘talky’”

There are still some well produced filming assignments on the programme, but with most editions having two or more films in them, the main traditional ‘assignment’ tends to get diluted by the poorer directed weaker ones and does not stand out. This then makes the studio parts of the programme look like a series of poorly produced links.

I noticed that not many of the programs were live anymore. You can see footage of some days episodes on the presenters profile pages on the website even before they appear on the TV!!!! madness!!

It's been that way for a number of years though - I think even when it was at three days a week no more than two were ever live, while since they've gone back to two days a week I've always assumed the second show of the week was recorded after the first.

I thought I'd have a go at predicting what the next annual will be like.
Constructive comments please!!!

I did it on powerpoint and took into account how the new workmark would look on the annual and the graphics used on the programme have featured in the background.

Not sure why 3 BP logos are needed along with 2 of Pedigrees'.

I think the left bit is the spine of the book.
