Looking at the original titles and I noticed ‘the hot spot’ on one of the model buildings (at least I think that they’re buildings), and I couldn’t quite remember but was that the term used for the place to stand to take on the gold run?

This is correct, "take your place on the hot spot please".

Quote:
What are the original titles about? The earth, some form of eclipse, flying hexagons, a futuristic city, a random flashing board, a tunnel or hallway with random artwork displayed, the studio and the appearance of structures of gods?

From Wiki: "The title sequence used from 1986 to 1994 is a city, paying homage to science-fiction films such as Metropolis (1927) and Blade Runner (1982".

I presume its code for "we had a bit of budget to spare so we went to town on it". The 1989 Blockbusters Annual (!) documented how they made it and that was reposted here:

Watched it last night and was pretty impressed and actually glad they went back to using sixth formers - adds a bit of innocence to it. Guess the tiebreaker is a necessity to keep episodes self contained, which given where and how it is scheduled is understandable.

Sounds very Sega Megadrive to me Sad
Unless the actual title music is in the first few seconds of that clip, which seems to have a bit more gravitas.

You actually not far wrong with that as Marc Sylvan and Richard Jacques both to a lot of work for the Sega and the Sonic series of games.

They do seem to pick up a lot of work for gameshows as well. Marc Sylvan over the years had done a plethora of them.

Yeah, just visited Marc's site and he definitely seems to be the go to guy for so many gameshows - including ones never to see the light of day again!

He did great work with reworking Catchphrase and Crystal Maze, and on watching Blockbusters it's not that bad. The first few seconds sound like something straight out of Stranger Things so to keep that 80s feel is actually quite a nice homage I think. I don't thInk the original can be beaten but it's the best remake out of all the versions.

I enjoyed the episode, it was nice of Dara to acknowledge the theme tune at the top of the programme. He's a good choice I think, rather than just going for a standard presenter who wouldn't offer much more. The set works well with the audience all around to react to the jokes.

Can't blame them either for not wanting to roll over contestants, it does help neatly show any episode at any point in the schedule.

Any picky criticisms? Well not sure we needed the contestants rocking up to their seats and the lack of 'you're a loser' sound effect on the Gold Run! The titles themselves are much the same as every other title sequence - a bunch of shapes milling about on the screen for 30secs before revealing the logo. Those original titles used to blow me away every time I saw them, is it just impossible for title sequences to do that anymore? Something that makes you sit up and go 'wow'?

The chap (or people apparently according to the blurb) who does the Abandoned Rugs channel on YouTube did a semi-decent little cover of Quiz Wizard a couple of years ago:

Sorry, I have read the previous posts in this thread but must have missed that bit at the very end of your post.

I get the abject feeling questions are only part coming up on the iPad judging from the way Dara reads them, or they're slow to appear in full. An issue that could never occur with these strange things called "question cards" of the 1980s/90s Very Happy

Entire show feels more like a panel show in all honesty with participants who randomly jump in with comments and throwaway remarks, but I suspect contestants/students are deliberately chosen who will behave in this fashion, either that or they're all on something.

Not sure it could be classed as "cheating" on tonight's episode just randomly guessing at what the answers could be seems a bit "off" really since you've already been given an inkling of where the clues are going so... I dunno. Maybe I'm a purist and spent far too much time watching the Holness years and that's what I prefer.

I added the new theme to Charlie Wheeler's recreation and it works pretty well:

More of Charlie's fantastic creations can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/user/WhoTV2009

This one deserves a special mention, making ingenious use of the blue and red buzzers from the original series.
