Out of interest when did he start doing over the top voice-overs like that? Watching an early price is right with Bruce Forsyth on challenge the other day he did his voice overs like any other voice-over person would.

When Patrick Allen died?
Correct. I've not once seen him offer any credit to his superior predecessor though.

Well neither of the two of them only had one voice. Patrick Allen was an accomplished actor, and Peter Dickson was BBC Radio's youngest ever newsreader. Peter Dickson was brought in to replicate one of Patrick Allen's voices, and managed to make it successful. Peter Dickson's was a more powerful rendition - especially on The X Factor, and he happened to be doing it whilst it was popular.

To be honest, the voice on Bruce's Price Is Right wasn't that different to his later one - he sounded younger, and spoke a bit more quietly.

I think the issue is, that in the past when voiceovers have sounded like Peter Dickson he's companied about it. I remember this was the case with Graham Norton's Totally Saturday voice over, although I don't know whether this was a joke I misinterpreted.

In that case, though, it was a bloody awful impersonation.

Well, the fact the voice over didn't sound anything like him.

Ah, right. It was clearly an attempt at an impression, and I think he was just trying to defend himself at a time when his voice and impressions of it were everywhere.

But the point was it was an impression of an impression.

Isn't this more that they're just going to do it as a feature in a tribute programme hosted by Paul O'Grady rather than bring it back for an episode in it's own right?

Well Peter Dickson was hired for the quality of the voice.
