Just happened to be flicking around the channels and Bingo Night Live has gone off air due to technical problems - lots of pre-recorded apologies and now an episode of Creature Comforts - wonder if it's a post watershed version? lol!

It's back at 01:16 - according to a poster on Digitalspy they had computer troubles.

Shame really, a night of Creature Comforts would have been much more entertaining.

Many of the Quiz channels went off air probably due to the fact that their computers couldn't handle the clocks going back.

Yep, Challenge Jackpot on Virgin 1 was also down at 1am before the clocks went back.

For anyone who wants to see BNL handing over to ITV1 for Creature Comforts and back, I've uploaded it to YouTube:

Fair play to them though for doing some announcements specifically for BNL - a good idea given the fact there's no anno around during a live programme.

Shame someone had to run through the list until they found the right one!

Am I the only one who thinks this kind of cock-up is completely unacceptable, especially in this day and age? Not that i'm bothered about dreadful programmes such as BNL going off air, but changing the clocks is hardly alien - it's been done twice a year for decades and I cannot believe that in 2008 these programmes use computers that are completely incapable of switching back and forth from DST.

On another rant, why the hell do ITV use pre-recorded annos. When it goes wrong as in the above clip it aint half irritating.

It's not too shocking that it can happen though. Since these shows/channels are usually built on bits of proprietary software kludged together into working, it only takes something like, for example, a counter measuring the time since a game started to suddenly become a negative number, before everything else collapses around it. In the process of all this kludging I can imagine some integrity testing goes out the window :p

I think it's more the case that, knowing a time change happens twice annually, the broadcaster should maybe prepare for it. If problems are anticipated or become more likely then why not re-schedule Bingo Night Live to ensure that everything is in order before going to air? Or perhaps be prepared to switch to Plan B should things go wrong while on air, and make sure the announcements and backup programme are good to go. Watching that video it feels as though ITV were caught by surprise that we have GMT and BST. I don't doubt it's more complicated than hitting a red button but - come on, they do this all day every day?

I mentioned in the other thread about clock changes, Quiz Call had problems the same time last year. The bit that went wriong then was the graphic which showed how many people had called in the last minute and they never got it fixed before the "duplicated hour" was over.
