The first, second and third series had excellent casting and then they got the casting wrong one year and just decided to make it more of a gameshow the next series which did kind of work for a while but then it just became a total argument fest and lost its organic zing.
You really felt you'd learnt something about those people and you figured out for yourself who the winner was over time rather than having those silly back door evictions and fake evictions and evictions that are reversed so the housemate goes back in.... I mean they really ruined it.
That was one of the big problems, it got so complicated in terms of its rules and contestant history that it was impossible to start watching a few weeks in and know what the heck was going on. The format at heart is the basic template reality show and that sort of got lost
Apparently the main show has to be wrapped up and the audience gone by 23:00 hence the delay.
How does it work if 4th and 3rd place contestants are announced while phone lines are still open to vote for the winner?
The lines for the eliminated contestants are closed but the others stay open. So the person in second when they announce who's third could still win if it's close.
The recurring problem for Big Brother is that it has a toxic reputation among many in the media. It’s seen as just another trashy reality show with added complications such as fighting between contestants, accusations of abuse, racism etc. Now, those elements for me prove it is more than your average reality show, but for broadcasters ultimately mean the show can be more hassle than it’s worth.
I was always convinced that Channel 4 dropped the show when it became more hassle than it was worth for them as a publicly owned PSB. It was always going to get them dodgy headlines in a climate when you have a government quite keen on letting the market decide.
Unleashed from the considerations of being on Channel 4, I reckon it initially got a new lease of life on 5 because the channel just wanted the ratings hit and didn’t have the politics of Channel 4 to consider. There were new production values and the boundaries were pushed. The series with Courtney Act and Anne Widdecombe had more mature debate about social issues than one hundred episodes of Question Time.
Ultimately, it’s gone because 5 has moved direction. It wants to do serious documentaries with big stars and try to take on Channel 4 and BBC2. Big Brother can’t operate in a silo, if it’s on your channel that’s what you’re known for, and if you’re trying to relaunch your channel as the home of serious shows with names like Michael Palin then it’s the last thing you need.
It could still do a job for a channel, but it would have to be a channel which doesn’t have delusions of grandeur, for whom this sort of show is their modus operandi.

but in theory, if it's close, the person in third could also still win until they are eliminated, but it seems they are eliminated well before lines close for that contestant so during the delay if you ring in for that person it's a wasted vote.

The lines were frozen before the show started recording at about 9:45. Fourth and third place were taken from this. The lines then reopened for the winner but obviously you could only choose between the two remaining housemates. Because of the delay the only way they could do this reopening was by having the fourth and third housemates come out together (which is always a bit rubbish) and then have a whole part that was just filler of Emma chatting to the ex-housemates.
The phone lines closing before the show began was explained in the Ts and Cs in the run up to the final so no votes were wasted and no one was misled.
I worked on this series and we all felt royally screwed over by C5. The planning permission for the house means that all live shows had to be over by 11, hence why all the eviction shows and the final were on delay as they all started at 10. I appreciate the show doesn't fit the channel's brand any more but to give a significant show just 75 mins for its last ever episode, tucked away at 10pm on a Monday night was pretty shameful.
Yeah, surely they could've kept the show going for four more days? Friday is a better timeslot for it and was traditionally eviction day. And the final should've been two hours.
The finals have been all over the place in recent years - think it is a while since one aired on a Friday.
Just 700k viewers last night unsurprisingly.
As for its future - hopefully in the short term it is the rest it requires but if it did go the streaming direction now that FOX have called off the sale of Endemol, meaning 50% of ownership will pass to Disney, I wonder if it could end up on the planned Disney streaming service eventually, perhaps initially with the back catalogue to test the water.
