Channel 5 didn't have the ability to do a good job of Big Brother. It never should have went to Channel 5 it should have been rested and missed.

itv2 would then have likely picked it up instead of love island (they admitted they were looking for it before love island came along) and it wouldn't have been stuck in contract with Channel 5.

Big Brother can be done well if you strip it back to a cold basic house and get the casting right. Channel 5's casting has been anything but varied.

I also think the last Celebrity version showed us that we still had new avenues to explore such as false accusations of abuse. I don't know about anyone else but I really thought that was a very important moment for everyone to witness and that interview with Emma was awkward but a fascinating watch.

Problem was - it was the perfect outcome not to rest the show, and for the production company and the new broadcaster.

It gave EndemolShine a massive multi peak hours commission.
It gave Channel 5 a show to jam up the peak schedule with.

And for Channel 5's owner, who also published two daily 'newspapers' and celeb magazines, plenty of opportunities to fill those publications with photos, invented stories, and free promotions for the programme.

Was always never going to leave the screens for an extended period of time once Channel 4 got bored with it.

... and they'd still be doing that if they didn't make a mess of it

Well it's the final night of Big Brother. There's barely a mention of it anywhere compared to the big send off Channel 4 gave it.

Will anyone be sad to see it go or are you fed up of it or would you think if it came back it could be a good show again with some alterations?

Channel 5 is under different ownership now, so the link with the Daily Star is gone. So that press publicity has been severely reduced.

Turns out one of the ex housemates has leaked who left in 4th and 3rd. Won't spoil who as I don't know who myself

Quite a long delay then, has it always been like that? Probably a good 10 minutes between 'live' and 'broadcast'

Emma sort of summed up quite well why Big Brother did so well back in 2000...no smart phones, Facebook, Twitter etc. so plenty of time to watch a load of strangers in a house together on TV for a couple of months every summer basically!

They used to have much longer delays during the Channel 4 days. I'm pretty sure when they'd announce an evictee, then take a half hour break for Friends (or whatever), they'd carry on with the eviction/interview while Friends was airing and then when it came back it would be on a half hour delay.

Or watching it online live all day on a tiny pixelly web video with a 56k dial-up connection, as I did in 2000 and 2001 Wink

The first, second and third series had excellent casting and then they got the casting wrong one year and just decided to make it more of a gameshow the next series which did kind of work for a while but then it just became a total argument fest and lost its organic zing.

You really felt you'd learnt something about those people and you figured out for yourself who the winner was over time rather than having those silly back door evictions and fake evictions and evictions that are reversed so the housemate goes back in.... I mean they really ruined it.

Apparently the main show has to be wrapped up and the audience gone by 23:00 hence the delay.

How does it work if 4th and 3rd place contestants are announced while phone lines are still open to vote for the winner?

Nikki Grahame has also spoiled the winner and therefore the runner up too. Great going this!
