Big Brother finished last year, does it really need to be bought back at all (and I say that as someone who was a fan of Series 1-3)

It certainly need needs to be rested for a year or two. It became far too predictable towards the end. I think if it's left a year or two more people would probably be interested again. Having said that I think programs like X Factor & BGT really need a year off.

I agree, they're really dull now, most telly is sadly these days.

Big Brother will be back this year, Channel 5 confirms

Reality show likely to be back in August as Richard Desmond- owned broadcaster finally concludes five-year £200m deal

Big Brother will be back on the small screen this summer after Richard Desmond's Channel 5 finally concluded eight months of negotiations to buy the format from Endemol in a five-year £200m deal.

A formal announcement is expected on Wednesday, and the plan will be to run Celebrity Big Brother in August for four weeks, with the traditional Big Brother returning nightly for a 13-week run in September.

The programme is starting late in the year because it has taken so long for the two sides to conclude negotiations that have stalled on several occasions, but Desmond is keen to extract full value from the contract in 2011.

Channel 5 taking Big Brother is a massive risk and I do hope it pays off for them. But non stop Big Brother from August until February could potentially burn the format out for good. I understand Desmond wants to get his moneys worth but surely he'd get better value for money if he looked at the long term future. By all means air Celebrity Big Brother and Big Brother at the end of this year, but they should ditch or at least postpone next years Celebrity Big Brother until around March with the main series in mid-June.

But interesting times ahead with 4 months before the Big Brother marathon goes to air, it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Ditto and I think it will because paint drying is probably entertaining and likely to trend these days but I do wish it was rested for a few years.

I hope C5 take more risks with the show if anything and push boundaries but I somehow doubt that's going to happen (certainly not this year anyhow). They're more likely to just stick 10 zelebs in there and just hope conflict happens e.g it's final years on C4.

Who knows though where the show can go now!

Well no surprise but the Daily Star completely contradicted themselves over the weekend, saying in one article it would be radically overhauled, then in another it would basically be unchanged.

In the right hands with people bold enough to make the changes necessary to give the show a chance of a half-decent comeback it really could work - but unfortunately this seems to be more about supplying the Daily Star with content than offering any new interpretation of the concept.

With it costing £200m, they're hardly going to purposely mess it up. The signs are already promising with the 24 hour live feed coming back and the prize fund increased to £500k, along with rumours of other changes that are long overdue.

Channel 4 put too many restraints on the series after the race row, but the Daily Star and Richard Desmond seem in favour of lifting the constaints. I imagine Endemol will have more creative control over the show than they did at Channel 4.

Is it really that difficult to read the VERY FIRST post in this topic?!

Big Brother: Channel 5 poised to sign £200m deal

Big Brother could return in August at earliest – but not fronted by Cheryl Cole, as claimed in Richard Desmond's Daily Star.

It certainly need needs to be rested for a year or two. It became far too predictable towards the end.

It was too predictable in terms of the types of contestants they got on but I think one of the main problems in all but the first few years was that they messed around with it too much. It's an incredibly simple format but when they put in lots of 'twists' only the most dedicated of viewers can follow what's going on or pick it up half way through.

The programme was at its best with a very simple format and a varied range of normal contestants with some life experience, the entertainment is from them intteracting

i think everything does, all these programmes conform to the law of diminishing returns. They can only be flogged for so long

Maybe they will hire producers over the age of 35, who would be more inclined not to cast loathsome braindead wannabes, who's only input is to appear vain and vacuous.

Or perhaps dirty des will stick to bimbos with boobs out.

Gosh, if only there was some clue as to the way this will go...

LOL!

The problem in recent years was the show didn't have the guts to make the changes necessary. The big twists were pretty well placed in BB5-7, but since BB8 got repetititve and desperate and didn't address the real problem - the shows overall format needed looking at (something BB11 did do to a certain extent). In essence it is a simple format, but that format doesn't have to be the same as it was a decade ago - it needed some new threads running throughout it, rather than being the same old format with a twist here and there.
