Teletext reported that Big Brother and Celebrity Love Island will be going head to head this summer in the same slot and ITV are hoping with Denise Van Outen as the host they can beat big brother in the ratings.

ITV are also planning a summer of reality tv with a new show called Soccer Idol and a celebrity version of Pop Idol. As if that isnt enough there will be yet ANOTHER series of Im a Celebrity Get me out of here in November.

What, BB and CLI are happening again this year? When will ITV1 and C4 learn?

Learn what? That it's a good idea to recommision popular and profitable shows?

There have been six series of Big Brother already, plus four series of Celebrity Big Brother, one which just ended two weeks ago. Did you honestly think it would be any different this year???

But Joe has a point. Just because the shows are popular and profitable, it does not save them from being a load of absolute trash. There are much better things they could be putting on TV at the moment than BB and Celebrity Love Island.

There are better things but no ones watching them when they do put stuff on.

What may be good in your eyes, may not be good in others.

Well of course they could be showing higher quality programmes, that's plainly obvious. But they would be mad not to try and repeat past successes. Incidentally I'm a fan of a BB but never understood the appeal of CLI. BB hasn't shown any serious decline in popularity just yet, although I fear they've run out of ideas and milked the same script too often.

I know but my point was that they will be putting them head to head with ITV thinking they have a chance to make CLI more popular than BB this summer. Plus ITV are showing several other reality shows this year including a Celeb version of Pop Idol.

Its no surprise that BB is back but im quite surprised ITV are showing CLI again as it didnt do that well in the ratings. If they think they are going to get the same sucess as Big Brother they are mistaken.

I was under the impression that CLI was a ratings success, but not a critical one. Hard to tell when there's only ever negative press about it.

I'm by no means a CLI advocate but it did ok in some respect. It didn't have the usual mass ITV audience appeal (made up predominantly of old granny Hearbeat and Robson Green lovers) but it did well in the 16-34 year old age group in which it was aimed and put a dent in Big Brother.

It's about appealing to the right audience, and the younger demographic, which perhaps more importantly for them the advertisers seem to like.

Only a small dent though - nothing for C4 to worry about.

The biggest threat this summer to Big Brother won't be ITV, but C4 rescheduling it. The World Cup games continuing at 9pm will be a much bigger opponent than Celebrity **** Island at 10pm.

And the sort of celebs ITV are going for - apparantly Chantelle - who wasn't even a celeb until Big Brother awarded her celeb status - has been offered £100,000 to do the show!
